Supernatural: Clip Show (2013)
One of the least likeable/enjoyable episodes of the entire series
Okay, hear me out.
I'm basing my review and score after finding out what happens to Crowley later on in the series.
So there are some SPOILERS here if you haven't seen the show beyond this episode.
First off, the idea that Crowley would go after characters that Sam and Dean had saved previously is a great idea.
It's a way to bait the brothers into doing his bidding, and is completely in character for the King of Hell.
But as much as like the fact that they brought Sarah (Taylor Cole and other previous characters back for this), after one of the most memorable episodes from Season 1, I really don't understand why the writers felt the need to completely kill her off.
Yes, we know that Crowley is evil and at times he has to show he has the upper hand over the Winchesters.
But knowing how his story unfolds in a later season, makes this episode feel very hollow. An even more hollow feeling than I had after seeing Sarah die.
Between this episode and Crowley's death, there's no revenge from the brothers for this horrible act: Crowley killing Sam's first love interest after losing Jessica.
They never get close to hurting Crowley in the way that he hurt Sam.
It also makes it seem like Sam is the one being punished but what about Sarah's husband, and her kids?
Sure, plenty of innocent people have died across the series, but for me this felt a step too far simply because Crowley doesn't get his comeuppance due to this incredibly cruel ending for Sarah.
South Park: #REHASH (2014)
Awful, one of the worst eps
Awful, one of the worst ever eps, and it potentially started the downfall in quality of SP.
Too much going on at once, with limited humour present in this episode, and the season finale that follows, #HappyHolograms.
Avoid both episodes, you won't miss anything by doing so.
Coach Carter (2005)
Great movie, and I don't even like Basketball!
Can Samuel L. Jackson do a thing wrong? His portrayal of Coach Carter was top notch and I found he believably instilled confidence in the Oilers Basketball team, in the same way the real Coach Carter most likely would have.
This movie can certainly be enjoyed by people who have no interest in basketball, or even sports for that matter. He teaches the players not only to win and be humble about it, but also to become more knowledgeable through education, learning respect and discipline were all just as vitally important.
Coach Carter had a set plan on how to not only make the team of players he had better athletes, but also to give them a fighting chance of surviving the outside world once or if they were accepted into college. Despite percentages showing that kids from the Richmond area were more likely to end up in jail than to succeed, he took his chances by making even the most unthinkable dreams for some of the players a reality.
For the few of you who are knocking this film (or intend to), saying things like "it was a snore fest" or "Samuel's worst role", you are by far in the minority and your pointless comments are quite simply falling on deaf ears.
This movie is inspiring, moving and certainly one of Samuel L. Jacksons best. 9/10
Reindeer Games (2000)
Just shoot Rudi already!!
Movies like Reindeer Games really annoy me... There is so much truth to Seth Green's character "Scott" from the Austin Powers movies, when he gives his advice to Dr. Evil to just "shoot him now!" The main reason I hate movies like this is because the bad guys have so many opportunities to kill the main character and then they all end up dead in the end. I just can't believe any character can be this fortunate, especially one played by Ben Affleck. And that scene with the "Pow-wow" safe?? What rubbish!
No wonder Matt Parker and Trey Stone rip on actors like Affleck. His acting was very ordinary in this movie and it's no surprise that his good mate Matt Damon is the more accomplished actor today.
And how else do I know this is a bad film? Even Matt Damon rights it off to Ben's face in the movie "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back". Nuff said...
The only performance I enjoyed was that of Gary Sinise's. He definitely is a convincing baddie. The clincher would have been if he had of capped Rudi before the end.
Don't punish yourself by giving it a second viewing, or even a first if you haven't seen it.
Grown Ups (2010)
5 Stars out of 10 was just about right...
My girlfriend and I have seen literally over 2,000 movies between us and Comedy has always been my first choice in terms of genre. I said to her going to the cinemas that I really wasn't expecting "Grown Ups" to be anything special and after an hour into it, I was contemplating walking out. That was until some eye candy in the form of Rob Schneider's character's daughters (minus the look-a-like one!) finally peeked my interest back into this lackluster film.
Yes you might have a go at me for being another typical male, but they have some scenery there for the ladies too, albeit a buffed up Canadian who's pepped up on too much helium. And I'm aware that there is more female flesh on screen but what do you expect from a film about 5 guys and a very thin plot? If you don't like it then why do you think 95% of people who go and see the Sex In The City movies or the Twilight Series are female? In other words, don't pretend that you don't know what to expect.
After 5 minutes of this film you know exactly where this film is going and I find that quite annoying despite the amount of "comedic" talent on show here. In saying that, having more than 5 big names in the same movie, doesn't always guarantee a great movie. Yet, Hollywood still falsely believes this.
And what is it with these movies putting a lot of their potentially funnier moments in their trailers?? We saw "Get Him To The Greek" last week and they were clever enough to omit some scenes in their trailer from the final product. It certainly helped with the film in the end.
At first I was wondering how more than half the audience found that first hour of "Grown Ups" funny. But it wasn't until the house lights went up at the end of the movie that I realized that 75% of the audience were under the age of 20. I'm all for slapstick humor but far too much of it looks like the cast were just reading straight from the script. Not too much imagination and improvisation at all from a group of comedians (Kevin James aside) who did this for a living on Saturday Night Live. When others have reviewed this film and have said that, "You'll like this film if you're a fan of Adam Sandler" is completely untrue. "Happy Gilmore" was very of its time which is why many still today regard it as a classic comedy. I can guarantee that unlike "Happy Gilmore", "Grown Ups" will not even come close to being regarded in the same way in 15 years time, let alone 5 years time.
Adam Sandler's time as an actor, writer and comedian are just about up for me, especially if movies like "Grown Ups" and the appalling "Funny People" are anything to go by. Now why have I given 5 out of 10 stars then you might ask? There were some moments where I was literally laughing-out-loud in the second half of the movie thanks to Rob Schneider, his more senior wife, and the cameo of the ever reliable Steve Buschemi. Schneider seems to be a natural for these types of films and despite getting hammered for pretty much any film he releases when he is the main character, he shows his versatility in this role. Very rarely have I seen a movie that advertises itself as comedy, do I find that the second half is actually funnier than the first half. So for that too I'm glad I didn't head for the exits early.
The other reason for my score is that "Grown Ups" actually tries to send a good message to kids in a few different ways which at least gives the film some heart. The scenes with the "phone-cups" (after Sandler's spoilt kids are deprived of their typically rich lifestyle - no video games, no mobiles)) and "learning to know how to win as well as lose" are important in a child's upbringing.
Seeing as this is my review, all I can suggest is, if you're taking your kids and you want a light-hearted comedy, then by all means, go and see it. Don't be put off by the usually foul-mouthed Chris Rock as his character is completely toned down and stripped of his usual outrageousness. If you are over the age of 25, then like my girlfriend and I, you'll should see right through this film very early on.
Son in Law (1993)
Son In Law - Review
I just saw Sin City for the first time this week and couldn't help but notice how attractive Carla Gugino still is, once I found out she was 39 years old!! After Googling her name, I stumbled upon a video clip picture that for me was instantly recognizable. SHE was the stunning brunette in the Bon Jovi clip for "Always" (1994). For 16 long years, I finally found out it was the gorgeous Miss Gugino (after not knowing all this time) who not only was in that clip, but also featured in a Season 5 episode of "The Wonder Years." More recently, she was also in "Night At The Museum" with Ben Stiller. Going into the video store this afternoon, I decided to get out "Son In Law" which I recall seeing as a teenager and quite enjoyed. After the revelations of the past week I again was surprised to find a young Carla Gugino in the lead role next to Pauly Shore. This is your typical 90s looking movie, just about watchable but nothing spectacular. Pauly Shaw's character "Crawl" is pretty much the same as his character in Encino Man. But like most people who have commented on this movie, they can't help but mention the equally stunning Tiffani-Amber Thiessen from 90s sitcom "Saved By The Bell". Someone mentioned in this thread she should have been in the lead role but the fact remains is Gugino over time has had a more prestigious acting career than Thiessen and her role in "Son In Law" shows this. In saying that, Thiessen is certainly memorable in this movie and easily sits in my Top 20 Hottest Females of All Time list. If anything, its great to see both of these girls in early roles and I don't agree with some people who have regarded this as "one of the worst movies of all time". Sure, Pauly Shore at times is annoying but if you want to see a truly bad movie, go check out Adam Sandler's very first effort "Going Overboard".
Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)
The most overrated movie of the year!!
For those of you who are saying that "Hot-Tub Time Machine" is the best comedy since "The Hangover", knock it off! You people are really delusional for thinking or even saying that... Rob Cordy has to be the most annoying actor in Hollywood at the moment and like Dustin Hoffman's character in Tootsie - Michael Dorsey - should be finding it impossible to get any work whatsoever!! I'm a huge fan of John Cusack (High Fidelity, Grosse Point Blank) but he just seemed so out of place here. "Kick Ass" as a comedy was by far better because for one it didn't rely on a big name like John Cusack & Chevh Chase as well as a ridiculous story line to draw people into seeing this.
Like one of the other reviewers said, "Jacob" played by Clark Duke is a complete waste as he spends a majority of the film chasing Chevy Chase's character around in the film! And whats with all the vomiting in film's nowadays.. It's unrealistic and way over the top.. And finally, why is Clarke's Mum "Kelly", OK with Lou continuing to have sex with her, even despite stating that he was going to impregnate her?? I know teenagers can be stupid but I just don't buy this kind of immaturity, especially on screen.
The Ratings may have 7.4/10 now, but I will not be surprised in the slightest when this drops below 6.5 in a years time..
Hollywood, stop wasting our time and hard-earned cash with this rubbish...
Fever Pitch (1997)
A classic movie about football, unless you support Spurs....
By now you would have read enough reviews to know about the story and the characters.
So here's my own opinion of Fever Pitch...
Like the DVD cover states for this movie, "Love footie, hate footie, you'll love Fever Pitch". Fever Pitch defines how hundreds of millions of football fans feel around the world, who are as passionate as Paul (Colin Firth) is about Arsenal FC. The relationship with his father, how he handles his classroom and the teacher next door at the school are all realistic, especially if you're living in an obsessive football supporters world, or any sport for that matter...
The fact that the Americans took this great script and tried to turn into a story of their own (See: The Perfect Catch) shows that it had great appeal on the other side of the Atlantic. The Americans sure have been lacking ideas of late and some have resorted to trying to remake old English classics, with somewhat less success.. e.g. The Italian Job, Alfie and now Fever Pitch.
In Fever Pitch, you could see Colin Firth's potential to be more than just an English character actor and we all know where those early efforts have gotten him today.
A funny film, well worth watching if you've ever been passionate about anything in life, and regardless of what team you support (except for Sp*rs probably)...
Cloverfield (2008)
Don't watch if you are hungover... it's only makes it worse!!
I had the unfortunate pleasure of paying $15 to watch this 'movie' when it first came out and man did I regret... in more ways than one! I like the idea of a huge monster attacking a city but not if some idiot is going to film it all through a video camera.. I'm sure my rating would have been higher if they had just made it as a normally filmed movie. It would have worked just as well.. As I have written in the title, I watched this movie hungover in the cinemas and I had to throw up halfway through it which, if it hadn't been filmed through a camcorder, then I'm sure I would have sat through all of it with no problems. In saying that, I'm feeling sick right now reading through other people's reviews of this film as it's giving me flashbacks of a film I most definitely want to forget...
