Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010)
Stretching what would be the first 40 minutes of a Harry Potter movie into a full 2 and a half hour movie?
So, did they split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two movies for money? Or did they do it so they didn't leave anything out? Either way this movie was boring, and I mean really boring. The movie follows Harry, Ron and Hermione seeking out the remaining Horcruxes to once and for all defeat Lord Voldemort or, well, it's supposed to. For the most part it's just them sitting around a campfire, no joke, a journey that would have been done in a ten minute montage in the other Harry Potter movies is stretched out into three quarters of the film. The movie also expects you to have read the books, it often takes onto another scene or portion of the film without explaining what's going on whatsoever, it goes from the wedding scene, to the streets of London to them going on a camping trip/journey without much explaining of what's going on. I have also read a lot of reviews saying this movie is the most action packed of them all so far, which is not true at all, in fact, I would argue that this is the least action packed. Really nothing much happens through the whole film, there are three scenes I think where Death Eaters attack, and they're quite fast and are over quickly, and just as the movie starts to pick up, it ends! Which is ridiculous since the movie goes for two and a half hours. This movie was a bore and a let down too, nothing much happens throughout and it's very slow paced and seems to drag on. The movie is only saved by some good performances by the lead cast, and a quite witty nod to the 'Twilight/Harry Potter war'. 5/10, 2/5
Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010)
Bad...In every way, shape and form.
Having read the book in school and hating it, I didn't really expect much from the film adaption. So I didn't get disappointed nor see the film as a let down to me, Though to die-hard fans of the book it may not be a let down, since it basically IS just a live action conception of the book; complete with line to line melodramatic dialogue and ridiculous scenes! Being based on the book of the same name, Tomorrow, When the War began is a quizzical, childish and at most times unrealistic look at war, The main characters are as one-dimensional and generic as just about anything and none of their stories are interesting nor intriguing at all. There is the brave one, The poetic one, The tough one, The couple, The religious one and the posh one with three speaking lines all delivered as if it were straight from a Primary School production.
My main problem with this film; is the scene placing, it goes from them planning a camping trip, to being happy, to being scared and to "fighting" all in the first half hour of the film, after that pretty much nothing happens.
The bottom line of Tomorrow, When the War Began is that it is a cringe worthy movie that never picks up and doesn't have anything to offer throughout the whole film. 4/10
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Fun, fast and action packed!
The original Iron Man is obviously a hard act to follow; but surprisingly Iron Man 2, just about pulls it off! It revolves around the star ego of Tony Stark, playboy millionaire by day, action hero by night; although this time around he is no longer prone to hiding his identity because he revealed it to the public. This sparks controversy, shocks and outcry through the US government.
The acting is superb, Whiplash is very intriguing, when he is actually in it; mostly revolving around his real identity- Ivan Vanko. Robert Downey Jr also delivers a stellar performance as Stark, who's device is not only saving him but killing him also.
The special effects are amazing whether it is chopping race-cars in two or Iron Man fighting corrupted robots next to war machine, it is sure to be one of the best visually of the year
Overall, you're in for one hell of a ride, i would give it a seven and a half but it is closer to an eight.
South Park: Sexual Healing (2010)
Going, Going, Gone...
When you think about South Park, you think about the shocking laughs and controversies it has had over the season; but you also think about the sort of, touch it used to have. I mean it obviously wasn't touching but it made you grow to feel for the show.
I think South Park started to lose its touch in season 9, that was kind of were there was no more magic in the air. Season 10 did kind of strike back, but the last three have been utter cop outs.
If this is what is to be left of South Park, and if it goes the way of the Simpsons, i will not watch, not because of lack or interest, i think i will not be able to do it with season 1-8 in mind.
Triloquist (2008)
Possibly the worst movie all time
Okay, to start things of, I've seen some pretty unbearable movies in my time; EG: Disaster Movie, Troll 4, Epic Movie etc. But this one comes very close to taking the cake. The idea of the movie is pretty juvenile, a ventriloquist mother dies leaving her children in a foster home with the dummies, and yep you guessed it, the dummy is actually alive!
From here on the movie takes very lame twists and turns, it wasn't even fun to predict who would die or what would happen next because it was so predictable.
The movie was also very poorly written and badly acted, every second word the main female protagonist said was a curse word and the male character didn't was mute or something.
Anyway this movie really blew me away, how bad it was of course, blew me away.
1/10
Green Zone (2010)
A real bore
After reading reviews and seeing posters on buses saying "bourne goes epic" i thought this was going to be a very intriguing movie, but when you get into it, you will discover, this movie is hardly epic, nor is it action packed, its a boring movie about a conspiracy theory.
The movie starts off with Matt Damon's character Miller leading a squad into what they believe is a terrorist planning facility or something, but it turns out to be a Toilet Factory, hey that's kind of what my expectations of this movie were, then what i realised it was!
There are two very big things about this movie that bugged me a lot! Firstly there is a character called Lawrie Dane, who; in the actual movie has about 3 speaking lines, but in the end in what seems to be an epilogue she is treated like a main character!
Then secondly there is a character Freddie, who is an Iraqi citizen and is trying to take back his country so to speak. Freddie has lost his leg in an incident that is briefly but not descriptively told. But in some parts of the film Freddie's accent and leg are kind of used as a novelty, then in the very last scene which i will not describe what happens, Freddie almost blatantly has a cliché, joke moment!
This movie was very boring 4/10 1.5/5
Avatar (2009)
The biggest blockbuster of all time is also one of the most disappointing.
When I went into IMAX to see Avatar; from the hype I had heard, I was expecting something revolutionary, what I got was an overconfident cinematic mess.
Avatar has amazing visuals, whether it is the first time you lay eyes on the Mythic world of Pandora, or watching the protagonist, Jake fall down a seemingly deadly, massive waterfall, the visuals never get boring. But the movie, which is pretty much 3 hours worth of nothing, really gets old.
Pretty much the movie revolves around Jake, a paraplegic soldier who with other soldiers is sent to Pandora a world inhabited by the seemingly hostile Na'vi race. The Soldiers are sent to recover the mineral Unobtanium which the humans need to save them from an energy crisis. Since Humans Cannot breathe on Pandora's surface, they must create a Na'vi hybrid for the humans, they call this the Avatar project.
From here I thought this movie was going to be one of a kind, it seemed to have an interesting story, but then the movie started to develop. I'll let you see for your self, but everything that happens in this movie i saw coming from as soon as i realised the cliché that this movie was.
