Frankenstein (2004)
What a visual pleasure
I read the book years ago, and loved it. I also saw the Kenneth Brannagh version and was pleased. So I was wondering what new things this version would bring me. I bought the DVD because of Sutherland and Harris. And when I watched it, I recognized the story, of course. But yet, I was really entertained. it was new, it was above all beautiful. The cinematography was very good, sharp en sinister. A real new movie. This was good stuff. And I will see this once again. 176 minutes is a long way to watch. I planned it over two evenings but went straight to the end and midnight. This means something. I recommend it for an entertaining night.
Straw Dogs (1971)
Stifling, impressive, showing how raw the 60's could be.
I never saw the movie before, don't know how that's been possible. So, when I came across it on dvd, I bought it without knowing what it was about. This is always a good start to see a film : without any prejudice. It rolled over me like a flood. On one hand the narrow-minded evil of a small British village poisoned by the wickedness of racism against anything coming from "outside", oiled by bottles of whiskey and on the other hand an unworldly young American couple grown up with the customs of a flower-power-age at a U.S.-university, not aware of the upheaval they cause and full off good intentions to "integrate". The result is stifling but never overdone. The violence is raw, but expected as a logic and fluent result of the prologue. Very impressive. It also shows that, even in the time-period of flower-power and "peace, no war", narrow-mindedness still existed - and always will. Alarm, possible spoiler : a peaceful "mathematics professor" turns into a "calculated" fighter. The first part of the movie is built up as a real prelude of violence to the massacre in the second part I'm happy and content I bought the dvd.
Nemo (1984)
Extraordinary
This is a real extra-ordinary movie in the full meaning of the word. I enjoyed every second of it. The way I found it , should be told to interested film-lovers; there is a new release of the movie on DVD under the name "DREAM ONE" by INDIES Home Entertainment (together with another movie "The Far Pavilions") and since may 2003 to be found in all the decent DVD-shops of Belgium and the Netherlands, or you can order it there. Sure a new release not to miss for such an old but special movie. And NO, I can not tell you what it is about, it's too strange and certainly an experience you have to go through without any prejudice. Open your eyes and mind and go for it.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
A dream come true
This movie is really a dream come true. But you need to see the extended edition, which becomes a complete different film. Although the dvd is indispencable, everyone should see the movie at least once in a movietheather. GREAT
