Meet the Natives (2007)
Follow us on a journey to an distant and exotic island... England
A group of five men from the small island of Tanna, Vanuatu, is invited to travel halfway around the World to visit an exotic island called England where they will live with three native English tribes, the Middle Class, the Working Class and the Upper Class. The ultimate goal of their adventure to this distant island kingdom is to meet the son of their god, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and consort to Queen Elizabeth II.
This is a wonderful and loving depiction of the five mens journey and their impressions of a society very different from their own. At home they live close to nature and their responses to some activities in England are spot-on, especially their comments on keeping traditions alive and on different kinds of hunting, for a living and for sport, are memorable.
I suppose this film is given an extra dimension if you are not English, they not only manage to give a warm rendering of their own society but a hilarious treat of the English as seen from a foreigners eyes, and the fact that they don't have a "Western" point of view in a way sets things in a new perspective. The production is by Channel 4 and that is noticeable, it is a British production, but the message comes through.
Hotaru no haka (1988)
Animated film at its best
To give Hotaru no haka a fair judgement is hard. It is without question one of the best animated films I have ever seen. The way most of the kind of action you would expect in a war movie has been scaled of and replaced by plausible characters and beautiful and powerful scenery, always created so that it seems as if a painter were creating a new masterpiece in every cell, it makes the protagonists lives seem more real than just about any other war depiction I have seen this far. It is quite special in another aspect as well, as it depicts japanese civilians during the second world war I can honestly say that this is the first such film I have seen, a situation I think many can identify with. The fact that the film does not demonise any human beings, not even the enemy, which can only be seen as anonymous bombplanes high up in the sky, but just tells a tragic and timeless story about a boy and his sister and their struggle to survive in wartimes is actually what makes this film a true masterpiece. This will be hard for any western filmmaker to surpass.
The summation can only come to this: if you haven't seen Hotaru no haka yet, do it, you will not regret it.
Ice Age (2002)
Funny, but does not reach greatness
This was a nice film, it was funny and so on but it had a major flaw: It embraces many classic Hollywood clichés. At points it is almost too much with all the classic plot evolution that can be found in a not insignificant number of other titles, mostly found in the adventure and action genres.
The dialog was witty in a very characteristic Hollywood manner and if you don't like that this film might get a little annoying but not impossible to watch.
The animation is surprisingly cubistic for a film made in 2002 and that could be allright if it were a stylistic move but that is not obvious from the film. If you compare it to such resent computer animated films as "Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within" and "Shrek", both are by the way made before Ice Age, you will probably be disappointed if you wanted a brilliantly animated film.
With this I want to say that this is a nice film, worth the time to watch but does not give much more than an average Hollywood production.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
Wonderful film, but already old...
This film is in many ways outstanding, it is the first good attempt I've seen to completely computer generate life-like human characters. The impression, which by the way is over all good, only leaves more to wish for in a few subtle cases e.g when the characters holds things in their hands or something with their walk. It is fascinating to realize that this film was ready and released in 2001. The fascinating part is that you realize what is happening to the film industry, in the area of computer rendered environments and beings the machines and software is undergoing a constant evolution that hardly rests for even a second. One can only imagine what will be possible tomorrow. The plot may be a wee bit thin but it still is a beautiful twist on the "Alien Invader"-theme.
The film is awarded seven points out of ten because of its beautiful scenery and props and its (visually) extremely well made characters, but the plot and character personalities unfortunately adds a little minus.
I am looking forward to seeing more films like this one.
