Agrajan (1995)
a phenom called "Thilakan"
it has occurred at least a 1000 times after we watch a movie that a single performance, no matter how small it be persists in our minds. Here, the master carpenter of malayalam cinema, Thilakan bags it. The role of half paralyzed, shrewd and shady "Thurumbu Govindan" that he portrayed in this movie will always stand unmatched, keeping the ruthless fact that this movie or him weren't recognized or well known among the notable biggies.
rivalry remains a common subject in movies and that between two "newspaper tycoons" is the subject here. Following is a series of events occurring after an illicit son of one of the tycoons joins the firm. some unnecessary songs and sequences paint the movie dull, but special appreciation should be handed to Dennis Joseph for sustaining considerable amount of thrill and fun but moreover for utilizing and assigning "unbelievably natural" genre roles to veterans in movies. overall, not a boring movie, but sure unlucky!!
Grihaprevesam (1992)
tickling and brilliantly sensible..
Imagine a bride and groom getting married "by mistake" in a heavy crowd while their prospective partners stay helpless!! For others it's a case of laugh, but for them, hell..
Jagadish portrays the role of Kannan, a peon in a government office who is an innocent, good at heart and semi-foolish person who marries Radha, played by Rekha. In a venue, where a number of marriages are held Kannan marries Radha by mistake in spite of his prospective bride. Radha is mentally torn apart realizing that her world is now with a total stranger and thus the story goes.
Siddique, Jagathy Sreekumar and Unnimary tickle our funny bone especially with their efforts to reinvent and train Kannan.Kannan's actions and reactions to those trainings again sets another laugh riot. Excellent performance from Sainudeen as a colleague of Kannan who fools him by calling him via imitating the voice of his wife on phone.
The film does have its emotional as well as funny moments but the story boils down to the fact that "fate" plays an important in life and thus delivers such a message. In summary, 2.5 hours of pure entertainment!!
Traffic (2011)
beginning of a new era in malayalam movie industry..
'Traffic' is undoubtedly, a carefully crafted work, flowing through deep emotional, tensed and dramatic moments. The thrilling plot similar to some of Hollywood's, the movie thrills with parallels weaved from four different angles of a police constable, a movie superstar, a divorced lady, a dying news reporter and his parents. Well worked screenplay, excellent direction, good apt background music and outstanding performance from some good actors all make this movie a heartwarming ride. Kudos!!
Still, it's a shock that veterans like Saikumar who delivered a class, subtle and marvelous performance in this movie are still underrated or partially utilized. 'Traffic' - 'never miss'.
Dabangg (2010)
now here's the strategy...
How can an average TV-watching Indian forget the hype during the pre and post release periods of the much anticipated movie Dabangg? Channels, movie critics, newspapers celebrated the movie like nothing, and sometimes everyone felt that it's the last bollywood mega hit before apocalypse hits..
I would like to hug and congratulate the Marketing Head of this movie, whomever he/she is. The person's tricks worked well. Don't feel like writing much about the actors or acting in this movie. Salman khan seemed to enjoy the character he did. Pity to audience(lost money) and also to Om Puri and Dimple Kapadia(gained money) who became so unlucky and unutilized to be a part of this movie!! some music, some catchy camera work here and there, and some involvement from Saloma khan. These are the 3 plus factors which are in this movie, but it's a shame that it's being compared to movies like 3 Idiots, which at least showed something to laugh and understand!! So can we follow this strategy in future? If there's an over hype before or after a movie release, then SURE..the movie is an utter waste...so watch out for the marketing monsters waiting and churning tricks to fool you in future movies to come...
Devadoothan (2000)
a misty tale of the past...
'Devadoothan'..meaning a 'messenger of god' is a perfect example of intellectuality and experimentation in Malayalam Cinema..where the silence of the movie says too much at times..it's always the unknown factor or the quest for the unknown which is haunting & likewise, Devadoothan though depicting somewhat a clear story line has the viewer feeling that "there's something at the end of the tunnel". Mohanlal beautifully plays a music maestro whose urge for truth becomes the core of the movie..almost all characters are beautifully arranged & do deliver beclouded statements which add to the suspense & justify their roles..giving us chills and enriching imaginations, the background music fulfills its responsibility as being the movie's backbone...Devadoothan may not be a movie for masses, but stands out as an effort which can never be forgotten..
Saandhram (1990)
Innocent steals it....
I always wonder why i watch this movie from beginning to end, every time it's being shown in the TV channels and then i realize the human tendency to laugh at laughables. Truly, Saandhram is a best timepass comedy movie with lots of funny scenes and dialoges and that too on a strong side from one of the best character/comedy actors of Malayalam cinema, Mr. Innocent.
From the beginning itself, Innocent captures our hearts through his stupidish/foolish/friendly styled dialogues and slapsticks. Kudos to the directors and scriptwriter as well. The feeling that the viewer gets of a family is neatly depicted. All actors in the movie including Kutiravattom Pappu(outstanding), Jagadeesh, Kalpana fulfill the "make laugh" tasks. The film has some twists and turns soaked in suspense as progressing through the end which may not be digestible to many, but undoubtedly "Saandhram" occupies a place among other comedy legends like "Dhim tarikida Dhom", "Akkare ninnu oru maaran" etc. Truly a one out of a 1000. A clean clear holiday comedy..
