Doctor Who: Turn Left (2008)
Fan-tas-tic!
I just saw this episode for the first time -- forgive me, I started Doctor Who three months ago, so everything is a new, wild ride for me -- and I was blown away by its sheer genius.
The episode is a classic what if, but it isn't cheesy at all. It's dark and moody and that feel of despair came across so well that I felt empty while watching it. Catherine Tate delivers a flawless performance that had me laughing and crying. But her performance wouldn't have been as good if the story wasn't so excellent.
I am hooked to Doctor Who and I already was even before I started the second season, and throughout season 3 and 4 there were some episodes that had me reveling in the awesomeness and greatness of this show. But Turn Left did it for me. It proved to me not only how timeless Doctor Who is and will forever be, but it also proved to me how important every single person in the Universe is and God, did it make me love Donna even more.
I guess, one of the biggest compliments I can give for this episode is this: if you are doubting if this show is for you, if you want to get anyone in on this show, if you ever need a reminder of what Doctor Who can do; watch Turn Left. It will leave you empty and desperate, yes, but it is so, so, so fantastic! It's brilliant.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Chaotically Beautiful
I saw this movie on premiere night in Holland, February 28, and had been anticipating to see it for months. The reviews were full of praise and if the award and nomination count was anything to go by, I knew I would be entertained.
As the movie began I found myself a little confused by the chaos in which director David O. Russell decided to film this movie, but as the story got a shape and I became familiar with the characters I found myself appreciating this way of filming. It was chaotic, but it was beautiful. A perfect nod to the state of mind Pat and Tiffany must have been.
This movie is one that deals with mental disorder, which are no laughing feat, but Pat's inability to be sensitive with his words and Tiffany's bluntness when talking about her past make you laugh out loud on many occasions. Soon enough you find yourself caring for these characters. For Pat, because he tries so hard, but is facing a family and a community that at first does not really believe in his recovery. And for Tiffany, because she is the kind of girl to do something for others without expecting anything in return. The movie throws memorable lines at you early on and you will be pleasantly surprised to see that events or comments from the beginning come back in the end.
This is not a movie you should go see if you wish to sit back and not think for a good two hours. Though it will surely be enjoyable and a good watch, I believe you cannot truly appreciate the beauty of Silver Linings Playbook if you do not take the time to analyze the characters and their actions. From Pat Junior to Pat Senior and even to Jake: Pat's brother, whose life is the complete opposite of Pat's.
Despite the nature of the film, dealing with mental disorders and all, it is a feel good movie that will have you looking for the silver linings in your own life.
Nikita: Wrath (2012)
Outstanding!
So, my growing love for this show might bias my opinion on this episode, but Wrath is one absolutely outstanding episode. And not even because the plot is amazing and unexpected. Wrath is outstanding because it features Maggie Q's best performance this season, maybe this series, hell, maybe ever! The way she showed true Nikita to villain of the week Brandt, the way she took her beating. PHENOMENAL! This is the kind of show Nikita is, this is what I love to see.
And besides getting to know this other side of Nikita, there was so much more to this episode.
Wrath, and Maggie Q's masterpiece, is what will get you hooked on Nikita if you weren't already.
