Circumstance (2011)
flawed but fascinating
First off....wow, all the Iranian expats posting reviews here seem to have an agenda and it seems like a number of reviewers are hating on this movie without having actually watched it (describing scenes that don't exist in the movie!) I thought this was a fascinating look at what goes on behind closed doors in Iran; not just the sex, drugs and rock and roll of the young people's underground club scene, but also the wealthy parents who drink wine and love to sing and dance. I think the only flaw is that the filmmaker is trying to tell too many stories of the affects of this brutal religious/political repression. There are a number of subplots and minor characters that aren't well developed, but the main story of the two young women who are in love and desperate for freedom is haunting and heartbreaking.
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (2016)
funniest show on TV
Samantha Bee on Full Frontal (TBS) is killing it! The sharpest, funniest show on television. Bee's delivery is machine gun fast so you may have to hit the rewind button to catch all the jokes. She skewers politicians on both sides of the aisle. This show is a tonic for anyone who's sick and tired of the pomposity, hypocrisy and flat out lies of our supposed "leaders". For anyone missing Jon Stewart and the old Daily Show, this is a worthy successor. I think it's smart that the show is on weekly. This format allows for a more in-depth take on breaking news. Full Frontal and John Oliver's show on HBO are offering the smartest commentary on the U.S. body politic. Hope it's getting the ratings it deserves to insure it stays on the air beyond the current election cycle.
