Penny Dreadful (2014)
Beware those who lust for visual and audio stimulants...it will capture you entirely
There are few moments in life when you get to drip and drool your eyes and ears at the same time, while your heart fights your soul reaching to understand and become a lover of evil. Rare are those moments. There may be many that do not share my perspective, nor do they taste my words and vision, but then again, I am sure that some are like me. Hungry to feel, to truly feel life, and thirsty for ambivalence, for the evil to have a good face and vice versa and more importantly to see that even flawed ones have a faith to preach and fulfil.
The story captures you entirely, it tenses your moral beliefs and makes you see a side of you which, in some cases, has never emerged, or, if it did, it will be like candy for children. The characters are immortal, at least the main cast. The way they can evolve is a tribute to the writer, director, producer and more importantly to them, as they go beyond themselves as individuals and become even more than a true character, they become immortal. Eva Green...was made for this role, or maybe the other way around... The historical aspect brings front characters of tales and stories, of mythological and biblical implications fluctuating the narrative line between the world of the living and that of the dead...or undead.
If the style of the above description matches your taste, you will most surely be enchanted by this series. If it does not...well, don't let my poor reenactment of the style be an obstacle in watching this truly magnificent piece of art.
It's more than a TV series, it's music, it's image, it's story. It's poetry.
The Hangover Part III (2013)
Saved by the post-ending short video
I went to the cinema knowing that I shouldn't have high expectations, but I did (unfortunately). First movie ,best comedy of the previous decade; second movie, a very good comeback; the 'epic ending' movie, a really bad attempt to copy the first two.
Alan and Mr Chow were the centrepieces of this story, mostly because there isn't really a story. They try reproducing the stupid events we like 'oh so much' from the first two movies , but they fail completely. I can't blame it on the actors, they did what they could. Can't really blame it on the producer or director either because it's not their fault. The script was poor, the story is simply ...simple, no more could have been done with it.
I loved the beginning, it really was to my expectations but the trailer shows most of the interesting sequences of the movie (unfortunately). The post-ending video, with which we've been made used to see, was great and I truly hope that it represents the start of the 4th Hangover story, otherwise its a bad ending of the trilogy.
Leaving all the bads aside, I am still a fan of Hangover and always will be and even if the movie is not as good as the first two I still recommend it as a get-together way of spending some time while having a couple of good laughs.
Django Unchained (2012)
Well now...
I could, of course, start describing the film and say how great it is, how everything binds perfectly, how both of the main characters perform better than one could imagine, how the image harmoniously sustains the 'narration' and finally just how amazing it is (again). But, I won't do that, I won't do it since it would simply not be fair to the magnificent piece of art Mr. Quentin brought again ( after Inglorious Basterds). He is a trademark, he is imaginably rich in vision and manages to deliver it and all the promises made to the viewer, implicitly. Now, I loved the Basterds and I have to admit that only after about 16 times of watching it , in 2 months, I might have gotten a slight sense of 'old', but hey... it could have been worse. Django here, at least this is my impression, might top the 16 , maybe reach 20 views in 2 months. This film is once again the evidence that art still exists, Django is art...
Game of Thrones (2011)
A Legacy to Remember
I am an addict. I love movies as I love TV series, drama, comedy, war
all genres. As long as a production has something to give, to pass to its audience, I watch it.
I'll start by saying that Lord of the Ring was, in my opinion, one of the best movie series ever made. It made me drift into this fantasy world, full of magic and beauty complemented by blood and hate. Game of Thrones is the single TV series that has brought me close to that feeling of warmth and for that, THANK YOU!
It tells a story on many planes that always intercept at some point, it links the power of name and blood to the will of the people, it gives meaning to the word 'honor' and it surely makes you step into another dimension, that of kings and magic. I'm not talking about real magic, or not the 'Harry Potter' type at least, but about the magic of life, love and power. You barely can handle the week between the episodes, keen to see what comes next, what will that lord do and how will that prisoner escape, keeps you on your toes. It gives you the feeling of 'everlasting', wishing that it will actually last forever because: IT'S THAT GOOD!
I will end by saying that this series is unique compared to all TV series I've seen, better than Rome, Spartacus, The Tudors, etc
It's the closest you can get to the 'nobleness' it stands for so proudly.
