Last Man Standing (1996)
It's very orange
This film is a bit of an oddity. A remake of a remake, the story is so obvious you are never surprised by events, but the gunfights are pretty entertaining and Christopher Walken's turn as the husky baddie Hickey is suitably menacing. Also the fact that the attractive brunette has a completely pointless scene where she is topless in front of the mirror is a bonus. :) The camera work is stylish and the discordant guitar riffage of Mr.Ry Cooder is superb, the pace is slow but not sluggish and you can almost feel the heat and dust. This film is good but not great. Er... that's it.
X2 (2003)
Eh?!
Top film, thoroughly enjoyed it. Alan Cumming was a good addition to the cast, but what happened to Cyclops? While he is certainly not the best character, his hate - hate relationship with Wolverine needs to be explored more.
Now. My one problem with the film is this......
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE ENDING DON'T READ ON
.....in the climactic scene why did Jean Gray sacrifice herself? Obviously they had to escape, but when she telepathically told Xavier that this was "the only way", she was clearly caught up in the drama of the moment and not thinking straight, as were the rest of the gang. They all seemed to be blissfully unaware that sitting quietly at the back of the jet was a young man called Ice man. ICE man. Why, in the name of god, did he not just freeze the lake? He froze boiling coffee, I'm sure he could manage to freeze a cold lake!
While it's excusable for meathead Wolverine or young inexperienced Ice men himself to overlook this, I feel it's unacceptable for Xavier to have done.
I think 'X3' should be a quiet thoughtful human drama focusing on the relationship between an ex professor of mutant science and his therapist as he struggles to come to terms with the death of one of his young wards due to a glaring oversight on his part.
Perhaps directed by Mike Leigh?
Highlander (1986)
"Why Garfield? You cruising for a piece of ass?"
This is still my favourite movie ever! It's awesome! Dodgy special effects, even dodgier accents and some totally cliched scenes, but damn is it entertaining.
You can see Russell Mulcahy's music video leanings, but I dare anyone to say his scene changes and camera work aren't striking. The fish tank turning into a loch, the tilt up through the roof of a carpark to reveal the stunning vistas of the Scottish highlands, who cares if the storyline is slightly ridiculous, it LOOKS amazing and the soundtrack by that little known pub band Queen kicks a*se!
Clancy Brown is deliciously over the top as the almost pantomime baddie the Kurgan, and Lambert delivers his dumb one liners with glee. You can't help but get into it when he flips off a line to a German officer then fills his Nazi behind with lead. Eeeeexcellent.
The comedy is sufficiently amusing, (see Tricky Dicky from Eastenders dueling with Lambert over a petty insult then shooting his own butler for being overly irritating; "Hodgkins..." ), and the action is exciting and at times brutal.
This film knows it is not a cinematic masterpiece, it never hoped to win any Oscars, all it was intended to be was 90 or so minutes of no brainer fantasy escapism and in that respect it most certainly succeeds. Nuff said.
