Let Me In (2010)
yet another vampire romance movie...beats twilight drivel by miles though
The average grade given to this movie was caused by wrong expectations of what this movie was really about...mostly due to the trailer I saw a couple months ago... Was expecting a decent vampire horror movie with a little vampire girl having a feeding frenzy at the local school, and eating all the kids, with the hero kid finding out about her and killing her in dramatic showdown style. Sadly it wasn't the case, its a sort of vampire romance movie... only this time its about a lonely kid that befriends a little vampire girl. That being said, its thousands of miles ahead of the soapy uninteresting drivel that is the Twilight trilogy. The plot is well written, the actors play their parts very well and these kids are well on their way to become stars in their own right. The friendship between the kids is cute and you feel for the characters and their lonely existence. The movie doesn't have much pace, even dozed off a few times at the start of the movie, yet it is interesting watching the story unfold and it helps to have a few gory vampire scenes that are very well done, thrown in the mix. All in all, if you want to watch a late night horror movie, steer clear of this one. On the other hand, if you want to watch a calm well written story with little action, and you are tanked up on caffeine, then this movie is for you!
Mulberry St (2006)
High Expectations..
This movie came highly recommended by a colleague at work. Hearing someone say that they saw a cool horror movie that they really enjoyed, you cannot help yourself but follow their advice to check it out. Thus, we started watching this movie hoping it would deliver, yet when the closing title appeared, it came with a sense of disappointment.
Maybe our high expectations ruined it, or maybe it was all the rat noises thrown in to scare people... Rat noises, either with or without a bit scary rat close up, especially if you keep repeating it over and over and over, become tiresome to hear after a while. Why rats you wonder? Because its a twist from the normal zombie movies, it involves rats as the origin of all the problems. It does not explain why, maybe its because rats are icky and scary, and they kill people and such. The why or how are not important, that's left for you to decide... moving on.
The actors do a good job and the the characters are nicely played, you kind of feel for them and for what you know is coming, and its interesting to watch their lives unfold with the warning signs increasing in the background (TV reports, etc).
First half of the movie is quite uneventful, and it slowly picks up the pace, with a scare or two thrown in to to keep us going, or awake, depending on what time of the day it is. Until finally, and as usual with a zombie horror flick, chaos breaks loose and it has some good moments and scares. But in the end it raised more questions than it it could or wanted to answer... and I left feeling tired instead of entertained.
Don't watch this with any expectations whatsoever...
A Perfect Getaway (2009)
A Perfect Paranoia
I have to say, was not expecting much at the beginning of the movie, the start can be downright boring, if it weren't for the great scenery of the islands. Then, as you start to notice this perfect vacation is going very bad, it draws you into this tale of bad luck of this simple friendly couple. It has a good plot, excellent plot twists with a lot of suspense! Not to mention a constant sense of paranoia about whoever the characters come into contact with, with leads us to the constant thought "Are these the killers?". You just don't know, until it kicks into 5th gear towards the end, and finally get some real action going. The actors do a great job, and its refreshing to see Milla Jovovich outside of a zombie apocalypse setting. Very interesting thriller that is definitely worth watching!
Machete (2010)
Most excellent action movie!
Machete?? Who is this Machete?? Its a bad ass federale that does not take crap from nobody! HA!
Since seeing the trailer in the Grind-house movies I thought it would definitely make for a cool movie, lo and behold they actually made it !
Seriously funny movie, with all the possible clichés and Mexican stereotypes you can think of! Its gory, its violent, very educational regarding human anatomy! It entertains from start to finish.
I could watch this movie another dozen times and not get bored! Top marks for being nothing other than a fun grind-house movie like they used to make back in the day!
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
If you saw the original, don't expect much of this
Remakes are always risky... especially when an attempt is made to recreate a classic movie everyone knows, or a mark in movie history like the original was. The main fault was Freddy, which is always going to be Robert Englund, period. Jackie Earle Haley did the best he could, and I take my hat off for an incredible performance of a great actor, and after watching his part as Rorschach, hope to see more of him in the future. The second fault was the story as it was told this time around, it was boring, it lacked the suspense of the original, and the characters, for the first half of the movie, looked more like lambs waiting for the slaughter, than teens trying to survive. Little changed for most of the second part of the movie... Mind you, the performances of the young actors was good overall, and it was anything but their fault that the story wasn't captivating. Other then that, the special effects were pretty neat, and the scary parts came out well.
This is clearly aimed at a young audience that never saw the original... if so, watch the original instead.
Don't Look Up (2009)
Drawn into the torture of the main character...
Normally I don't write reviews... although after watching this movie, it marked my life in such ways I had to leave a comment and warn others. Just spare yourself the misery. This movie shows promise at the start, thinking of such urban legends as the filming of The Exorcist... yet sadly it fails to deliver. The plot is very poor to say the least, and the main character inspires as much empathy in his role as a mad director, that by the end of the movie you are actually rooting for something to happen to him. The movie ends, and ends again, then ends strangely... and I now have to find a way to wash my brain of this dreg...
