Midnight Mass (2021)
Extremely Overrater
Spoilers!!
It's a vampire show. There, you watched the whole thing I am glad to save you the time. It's vampire cliches, top to bottom.
The acting was reasonably good but the effects (even the few there were) were bad. The CGI vampire wings look ridiculous. Apparently it's too much to ask for anything to be done with practical effects these days.
Very cliche vampire story:
Mysterious patent zero? Check.
Sunlight kills them? Check.
Inner turmoil from a recently turned vampire? Check.
Vampire wanting to turn town into more vampires? Check.
I love Mike Flanagan but this is one that took so long to make for a reason. It's a cliche vampire movie drawn out into a series and sprinkled with Catholicism. I recommend watching House of Usher or Hill House instead.
Wrong Turn (2021)
Much Better Than Most Horror Schlock
I usually don't write reviews but I feel compelled I this case. I watch tons and tons of horror movies and you generally don't see the quality of story structure and acting this movie has. It may be a little disjointed but not at all predictable and provided a thorough experience. So many one note movies out there, this is a horror/thriller rather than supernatural horror and I think it serves the movie well. Acting was above average. I also LOVE that it jumps right into the action. No credits at the beginning, just immediate story.
Tl;dr: Better than most horror movies and definitely worth a watch.
Gehenna: Where Death Lives (2016)
It Wasn't THAT Bad...
This movie should have been 45 minutes long. Much of the movie was "atmosphere," meaning way too many dark/black screens with limited dialogue. The twists and turns were unpredictable, but it took way too long to get there; The low budget of the movie is definitely seen in the limited amount of diversity in the settings. Don't get your hopes up and expect to be on your phone a bunch waiting for the important scenes to happen and you'll have a decent time.
Red State (2011)
Pleasantly Surprised
I caught this on Netflix the other day, and came in with no expectations.I was pleasantly surprised. It it reminiscent of movies like From Dusk til Dawn; meaning its equal parts thriller, action, and dark comedy. I highly recommend you watch this even if you are not a Kevin Smith or Quentin Tarentino fan, you may be pleasantly surprised. I cannot speak highly enough about this movie, as there are so few good sleeper hits these days. It seems like there are decent movies with huge budgets (Avatar) or terrible movies with terrible budgets (Rubber).
As a side not, John Goodman single-handedly bumps this movie up at least 2 points. From the minute you see him on the screen the first time, you feel like you "become" a part of the movie.
Finally, thank you Kevin Smith for having the balls to produce a movie that will almost assuredly lose money because people in general have terrible taste these days. Hell, Jersey Shore is one of the top rated shows on TV these day...enough said.
