The Backwater Gospel (2011)
Horrifyingly Amazing
I must start out by saying, this is one of the best films I have ever seen, and it is also one of the shortest films I have ever seen. The animation is disturbing in its own way, creating a life-like mixture of zombie, wood and human that completely work for this film, being a perfect fit for the story and setting, which is a small, isolated, "Bible Belt" like town, completely run by a Lord fearing minister, who is almost as creepy as the Undertaker, the unspoken terror that controls the town of Backwater. The basic story, omen of death, is not new, but the way it is fleshed out, and tied in with religion is excellent, creating another layer of fear to go over the existing one. I cannot stress how important appearance is to this film, however, as the animation styles, as well as the Undertaker's "normality" (until you get to the shadow) is one of the major selling points for me. However, you should be warned, that this film does not shy away from intense amounts of violence and gore, to the point of where I cringed while watching, however, this should not keep you from watching the best film that I have seen all year, and it could absolutely win against any full length film that it is put up against.
The Fourth Kind (2009)
More terrifying than I thought. Few Spoilers
Having first seen this movie at a party with my friends, I thought that it would be some alien violence and nothing much more. This Movie, however completely scared me and all of my friends, mainly due to a few jump out moments. The plot was OK with some scary moments, but some parts just seemed overly dramatic and overacted in, ex. when she freaks out and gets in a fight when her daughter is taken and then is completely fine the next moment. One of the things that i thought made this movie more terrifying was that a lot of the film was "real" footage, or at least they said it was and filmed it with a cheap camera. The part where the first man committed suicide and killed his family was made a lot creepier by the fact that it looked different and more fuzzy than the rest of the movie, making it seem like it actually happened. And while I think that it was smart to blur the "real" footage when the aliens came, as it made the audience think for themselves about what was really happening, I think that the director abused this privilege and used it too much, barley showing much of the alien attacks and so on. Scary film, but take out some blurs, overacting and Milla Jovovich (who looked nothing like the woman she was supposed to be portraying, and you could have a genuinely scary film.
