Alien³ (1992)
well, i enjoyed it.
this is one of those films everyone seems to hate like terminator 3 and Indiana Jones 4 (both films i enjoy, i don't love them but i still liked watching them) and it seems to be because of the outrageous expectations people have of them. i mean with the previous films being pure genius, aliens is on of the best films i have ever seen, they seem to dismiss any film that doesn't match up to it.
First off the characters weren't bad, they weren't anything special but they worked well, i could sympathise with them at times and hate them as well, i also like the idea of Ripley once again being out of place as she was in Aliens and her getting to prove herself.
I thought the film looked slick and was very dark in terms of appearance and feel, its easy to tell its a David Fincher film, who is one of my favourite directors. However the film wasn't all perfect because if it was, i would have give it higher than a seven.
i thought that Ripley's reaction to seeing Newt dead could have been more shocking because she didn't seem very emotionally disturbed by it, and Hicks' death went nearly unnoticed, i'm not against killing Hicks because even though i liked his character i felt that it ultimately made everything harder on Ripley adding to the suspense because if Hicks was there then they would have killed the alien easier and ultimately would have felt like a let down.
All in all, its not the best of the franchise and made for a good finale, unfortunately resurrection came along, which wasn't terrible, but wasn't good either.
True Grit (2010)
loved every minute of it, screw the kings speech this should have won
i love the Coen brothers, i really do, all of their films have been they can do no wrong in my opinion and they carry on this tradition with this film. i have never seen the original true grit which may get me slated a large amount by fans of the original who refuse to accept a pretty damn good remake. i thought the standout performance was actually not given by Jeff, who still played an amazing part, but from Hailee who played the young girl who shown she can act very well and is actually one of the few good child actors along with Chloe Moretz. Even though i am not a large fan of Matt Damon he performed his role very well and played what is quite a simple character in a way that he seemed far more complex. Finally for Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, he played the perfect hard ass, grouchy drunken old man he had to play, i cant compare to John Wayne because as i said previously i had not seen the original. the story is very well executed and told and the one real action sequence in the film in which Rooster faces off against 4 criminals in the finale is a very well done scene which doesn't go too over the top with the action but still entertains. plus its great use of dark humour every now and then because lets face it, dark humour is awesome.
overall a very good film, highly recommend it over Black Swan, Social Network (which was okay and is still worth a watch) and the King's Speech.
The Green Hornet (2011)
funny and entertaining
this film has received a lot of hate, but sometimes critics get it wrong, sure its a dumb movie, but damn its funny as hell. as anything Rogen is involved in it is filled with incredible comedic moments, and also the action is pretty damn spectacular, there are always explosions going off and pretty awesome karate action sequences. the story isn't even that bad and pokes fun at some action movie clichés, for example the thing that gets the villain killed at the end is that in an attempt to become more scary and affective, he says a long speech just before he kills someone, thus giving the hero plenty of time to react. over all a very funny film, surprisingly well acted and just entertaining in whole.
Black Swan (2010)
overrated pretentious garbage
this film has been so raved about recently recently that when the offer came up to see it how could i refuse? i should have anyway because this is an extremely simplistic and straightforward. nothing about it seems subtle, everything is so blatantly obvious, nothing is played down. for example when she gets the plot of swan lake explained to her its extremely obvious that she is going to die in the end, i predicted from that moment. the way she turns into a psychopath just seems to happen, i cant really see any sort of gradual change to her new character. also i don't quite know what was up with the camera work, it constantly shook about, i don't know why and the camera filter choice just made the film look like crap.
everything just seems to the directors way of saying "i am far superior to all of you" and ended up just being boring. ignore what others say, this film was awful.
Gentlemen Broncos (2009)
a little gem
this unknown little indie film is a strange delight, i managed to catch it on TV recently and i was amazingly surprised. its premise did sound like a rip off of big fat liar, but its content was filled with a sparkling amount of originality. the cast wonderfully carry the story of original creations being destroyed which i believe to be a stab at all the films which may have been based on great source material but destroyed by the stupid minds the carry on to own them. the best part has to be the performance from Jermaine clement as a snooty and up his own anus sci-fi writer. an excellent treat for any hunters out there. i would highly recommend this film to any one who enjoys cringe humour that is made to make you feel uncomfortable.
