Clean (2021)
Familiar But...
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Adrien Brody is presently one of the very best, yet undervalued and overlooked actors of our time. His range is exceptional so casting him in this movie was a big plus. Most of the other main characters were also played by unheralded actors who performed their butts off. Top notch acting was consistently delivered which made the story believable. I also appreciate the way the story slowly unfolded as well. The cinematography was hauntingly beautiful and appropriate. The storyline itself was a familiar one as "Clean" reminded me of several other revenge movies; however, the movie was done so well overall, that its familiarity didn't stop us from enjoying it. Had the story told been unique, I probably would have given this more stars. Some seem to think if the story has been told before, that makes the movie bad. I disagree. While I did slightly lower my review because of the common storyline, I think it was a familiar story portrayed excellently.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
It was good, but...
One of my criteria for rating a movie is based on how I feel about my time after it's over. Did I regret the time taken to watch it? No, so that was a plus. Were the actors compelling & believable? Some were. Some weren't. Were the special and visual effects believable? Again, some were and some missed the mark completely. It's as if the effects were done two completely different ways so it half worked. Was the storyline unique, solid and/or told well? I split that down the middle as well. The storyline itself reminded me of several other movies that were done better such as The Magnificent Seven (old & newer versions), Star Wars, and another that slips my mind right now. So it wasn't unique. I also got the feeling that some of the story got left on the editing room floor because there were a few "huh?" moments. Was it predictable? Parts were; some were not. So that left me with a rating near the middle. I gave it a 6 because at the end, I did want to see where part 2 will go. So it's a good flick but not a great one.
End of the Road (2022)
I Wanted to Like it but...
It's hard to like a movie when so much of the characters' actions are absurd. This movie had potential but the story told was too ridiculous to help it live up to it. I love Queen Latifah and Ludicris so I wanted to like it. Even they couldn't help this movie rise above all of the unbelievable and stupid events. I don't care how good of shape an elderly person is, they wouldn't be able to kick their way through a bolted door without breaking bones. What happened to the guard dog? Did he simply show up to bite one person then vanish? He should've been there to prevent their casual walk away from captivity. The stupidity included more plus pulling out wads of money in full view of a whole diner of people at the end. Who would do that after being through what they went through? Uh. NOBODY. Mr. Cross's true identity wasn't hard to foresee either. This movie was not good.
Acrimony (2018)
Henson Delivers But...
Taraji P Henson acted her behind off so I gave this movie all 3 stars because of her; however, the movie itself was not good. It had unmet potential, came off a bit cheesy, was somewhat predictable and the end was unbelievable. I think there were some editing missteps as well as several scenes felt weirdly choppy. In fact, the overall flow was somehow off. Again, the end left me with more questions than I should have had. They tried too hard to be a flipped Fatal Attraction. It didn't work. With the exception of watching Henson give an excellent performance, I would say this movie was a waste of time.
Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B (2014)
Even the Music is Wrong
This movie was bad on every level. The worst part? It's a movie about a wonderful vocalist who created some really good music; HOWEVER, the music in this movie was awful!! This was not Aaliyah worthy. It was trash. She was not.
Unhinged (2020)
Unhinged writers
Nobody... and I mean not one person does anything that a person would normally do. In fact, everyone's actions are so illogical that they render this movie completely ridiculous.
The Intruder (2019)
Nope
I tend to hate movies that act as if people have absolutely no peripheral vision whatsoever. I upped this sucky movie to a 3 because it unintentionally made me laugh. *smh*
I Am Mother (2019)
So much potential
I am truly conflicted about this movie. I was intrigued and engaged while watching about two-thirds of this movie...maybe even longer. Then it somehow fell flat. It had so much potential that was wasted. I'd still recommend watching it however. It is entertaining and presents a unique premise. The actors are awesome and believable. It's it shame that it tripped and fell as it came to its conclusion.
Serengeti (2019)
Wow!
I have never seen a nature series about animals like this one before. Serengeti just set a new bar with their camera angles and the storyline is almost human. I can't wait for the next episode.
Halloween (2007)
Much better than expected
Spoiler Alert!
I respect the fact that everybody is entitled to their own opinion; however, I do not understand some of the very lowest of ratings given to this movie. I remember when the original Halloween came out. It scared me to death. Once the original is seen, however, you cannot forget the whys and the hows, so a remake is destined to disappoint simply because you already know that Mike is a killer child, that Laurie Strode will be his baby sister and a few other events from the original. Keeping in mind that you already know the spoilers from the original movie, I thought this re-make was well done. Was I afraid? No. However, I found myself held in suspense in spite of knowing the events from the original. That's no easy task. There were a few changes in the way of additions that made the movie make more sense. It was not as gory as other reviewers described, but I guess everyone's tolerance level for gore differs also. I have seen much worse gore depicted on CSI, Hannibal, and other TV shows; not to mention the cable shows. Have any of the people who whined about this movie's gore seen any Game of Thrones or Dexter episodes? I guess not. *chuckles* Anyway, as a remake goes, Rob Zombie did a very good job. Even the fact that the movie has an actual ending and cannot spark other sequels is appreciated by me. Very good job! The only reason that I did not give it a 9 or 10 is because it is a remake after all. This is the best score that I can give any remake.
I, Frankenstein (2014)
Not Bad, Not Great Either
With two of my favorite emotional actors in lead roles (Aaron Eckart and Bill Nighy), I expected more. Eckart and Nighy did not disappoint. The premise was good, yet it came off as a little too melodramatic. I think it was "meh" at best although it was not a complete waste of time either. It had its moments. Too bad there weren't more of those moments strung together to make a much better movie. I am usually more aware of where a movie went off-track, but I could not put my finger on the cause for my overall disappointment this time. Maybe something hit the editing floor that needed to remain or something was not edited that needed to go. Whatever it was, I feel generous by giving it 6 out of 10 stars.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Just GREAT!!!!
This was the best movie that I have seen in a VERY long time!! I do not know enough superlatives to describe this movie without sounding like I was PAID to say it. I was hooked from the very first "bang" all the way through to the end that seemed to come much too soon. The story made sense, the acting was incredible, and the fight scenes did not have that fake look that I grew to dislike in other movies such as Matrix Reloaded. The infusion of comedy, anime', the Japanese language with subtitles and a great soundtrack added even more enjoyment and excitement to this wonderful movie. Tarantino has outdone himself as well as all of the actors, choreographers, special effects, etc.. I can't wait to see it again and again. If you liked or loved Pulp Fiction, you'll go crazy over this. The same is true in reverse though. If you did not like Pulp Fiction, you might not like this either although I just cannot imagine anyone not enjoying this movie. I don't have any complaints. My husband, however, thought it would have been better if Uma Thurman and Lucy Lui had switched roles. I could somewhat see that BUT I ENJOYED IT TREMENDOUSLY AS IS!!!
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Disappointed
After all the hype, I was actually disappointed after seeing the Matrix Reloaded. My biggest mistake was watching the movie "Equilibrium" first. Although it was obviously done on a much smaller budget,"Equilibrium" was by far a much better movie. Reloaded was okay. I didn't like it enough, however, to want to see Part 3. I do wish I could see more of Equilibrium though. Oh well.
