The Curse of Oak Island (2014)
Take It For What It Is!!!
After reading the reviews for this show, I felt compelled to write one myself to clear a few things up. 1: This is a documentary not an action show, so don't be surprised if the show doesn't hit all the notes you might want - this is exactly what a documentary should do. 2: Yes, it could have been put into an hour or two documentary, but, if you can get past that, there's a LOT going on within this show. What they have uncovered is GROUND BREAKING, which shatters our Western views of history. It's sad to hear people mock that. Blame the producers, not the show or the subject of the show. But these guys deserve to get paid: they are poring millions of dollars of their own money into trying to uncover this; having a TV show helps them recoup some of that cost, I can imagine. Maybe another producer will make a feature documentary and cut out all the excess, because it is a bit of a slow burner for a television show. 3: This is the History Channel, which is notorious for using over-the-top narration. If you can filter that out and can handle the slow pace, I think you'll really enjoy this show, because, again, this is a groundbreaking story. Please give it a chance, because there's a lot of great information here.
Biggie and Tupac (2002)
Good info, awful style
So I have to place a disclaimer: I probably only watched 30 minutes or so. I loved a lot of the footage, so, I'm sure if someone is a fan of these artists, it's going to be interesting, regardless.
There were several reasons why I shut this film off: 1) Don't do an ambush interview when you're trying to get an honest portrayal of these artists; it was excruciating to watch, and the Biggies mom interview - the camera work is awful, where she's over exposed and has heavy shadows on her face. 2) Talk to these interviewees and don't stick your big microphone in their face.
It just made me feel this director didn't care one bit about the story of these two very important artists. He had all the right people and he ruined it. I'll never watch one of his films again.
My two words to describe this film: excruciatingly painful
American Hustle (2013)
Good, But With Its Flaws
I think a lot of the reviews have some validity, both the good and the bad, but I think most of them are way too critical, and probably too praiseworthy, for that matter.
For me, I thought Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence were stellar. Carmine, played by Jeremy Renner, was a bit like a doe with his sad blue eyes. The plot was pretty weak, but Russell apparently said he was more interested in capturing character interaction, rather than a strong storyline. I think he fell a bit short in capturing that. I felt as though I wanted to be more involved with Irving's guilt towards Carmine, but Renner's performance was just a bit too weak for that to happen. In fact, all these connections between the actors seemed to fall a bit short in intertwining with each other, which is too bad because Bale's character was really awesome.
I wasn't impressed with the cinematography, however, wardrobe, hair, props, were pretty awesome. But that shouldn't be the thing that holds the movie together.
All in all, it was a decent escapist movie, but if you want a true character study done right, check out Revanche, or The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. If you want to escape into the stereotyped party scene of the '70s watch Boogie Nights or Blow. If you've seen those, American Hustle might be a good fix.
The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (2013)
15yrs too late
I think I would have loved this movie if I didn't watched a movie in 15yrs. If this came out in mid to late '90s it would have been on everybody's shelf, but, today, it's just an hour and 45 minutes worth of same old story.
Don't get me wrong, the cinematography was awesome, colors were brilliant, but it was lacking any excitement compared to every single travel/drug/gangster/love movie that has been out in all these years.
This movie's far from trash, but far from brilliant. Check it out for some excellent cinematography and an OK story line, pass it by if you're ready to move on from watching the same movie over and over again.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Misunderstood
I think Eyes Wide Shut is highly misunderstood. The movie is wrapped in symbolism, which I don't think a lot of people, looking to see a blockbuster with Tom and Nicole, really understood.
Eyes Wide Shut is about social status and the power that comes with it. The movie uses secret societies, paganism with the winter solstice to tell its story. Every prop, color that has been chosen, every human interaction is done deliberately by Krubrikc to tell the story, which is why he is a master at his art.
The Christmas Tree, the color purple and gold, animal print all represent fertility. Alice is resentful for her husbands social status and longs to be an animal that "fucks." The best thing about this movie is that it provokes more mysteries and questions than it feeds our curiosity. For example, when they are having the orgy we don't really get to focus too much on what's really going on and we always peer into to other rooms getting only a small taste of what's going on.
This movie is--like I said--about social status, human sexuality (we are only animals who our real purpose is to "fuck")and of course secret societies, which provokes the question: are we just living as pawns to feed the interest of the social elite's twisted games?
This movie is extremely deep, and at times, I wish it had more to satisfy my curiosity, but that was Krubrick's intention.
