Der 90. Geburtstag oder Dinner for One (1963)
A baffling cult video
A few years ago one of my daughters took a Lufthansa flight to Europe on December 31st. She said the captain come on the announce the showing of " Dinner for One ". He had to explain to English speaking passengers the significance of the showing. My daughter was quite baffled by the program and mentioned it to me. As it happened I had seen it in Norway in 1985 and it stuck in my memory. I was able to pull it up on the Internet. It is pretty baffling that it should become a cult video in Germany in a foreign language. Quite a decent sketch but nothing remarkable really. It is virtually unknown in the English speaking world.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1978)
Why did this film suddenly stop ?
I thought Geraldine McEwan gave a sterling performance. Miss Gaunt was indeed a gaunt character well played. The girls Sandy and Jenny were very amusing and well played. Indeed the various girls in Miss Brodie's class played their parts very well. The thing that surprised me was that film stopped so abruptly without any obvious end. I would have expected more episodes. Did they just can it for some reason ?
Queen of the Desert (2015)
Mr Herzogs first feature film
Frankly disappointing. I had expected more of Werner Hertzog but perhaps it was not so surprising for his first feature film - unfamiliar territory ? For years I have studied the exploits of Gertrude Bell in the Middle East. She had a profound political influence in Mesopotamia. In effect she drew the boundaries of present day Iraq. Included within these boundaries were the Kurds , the Sunni and the Shia. We are felling the effects to this day. However Mr Hertzog seemed more interested in her love life - such as it was. I watched with my brother - he is even more interested in Gertrude Bell than me. He has visited the various sites associated with the Bell family - Red Barn in Redcar,N Yorks , East Rounton and Mount Grace Priory. Definite thumbs down from him. I suppose a "romantic" element was inevitable to attract an audience.
