The Little Mermaid (2023)
Dissapointing adaptation
The tale was filmed in a dissapointingly dark fashion, with most interesting side characters like flubber and Sebastian done in a too realistic way that killed everything that was compelling in their character in the original. The film was way too long. The casting for Eric was so boring and genEric in a hallmark kind of way. I really hoped that this would have been good but alas, it wasn't. Disney needs to create more original stories that don't have the burden of a great original film behind it. This concept is destined to fail unfortunately as it's no more than a glued on adaptation with mediocre cast.
La sindrome di Stendhal (1996)
Weak argento
This film sure was a dissapointment. Bad acting, BAD dubbing, weak and pretty pointless story. Asia has no clue what so ever. She acts like in a school play, overdramatising and without timing. The musical score in the movie is dull and doesn't add up to whatever feeling this movie has. Probably the worst argento movie I've seen. Ok, not as bad as the Phantom of the opera, but CLOSE. If you're going for an argento movie, watch Profondo Rosso, Tenebrae and Suspiria.
Darkness (2002)
Scary to say the least
This movie is a pretty classic style horror-movie that clearly is inspired by "the shining". But Balaguero has made a movie even scarier and more intense than "the shining". If you've never been afraid of the dark before, you can be sure that you will be after watching this movie. The darkness lives and builds up a hysterical feeling that leads up to a twisted, scary end.
Hets (1944)
Beautiful and dark
I've rarely seen such a dark and intimidating and superb movie from the 40:ies. Usually nordic films from this decade are pretty lame and follow a certain narrow path of simplistic comedy. This movie is very dramatic, partly thanks to Bergmans fantastic script, and Alf Sjöberg captures the moods and the weight of every moment and every pause. Every stroke of silence adds up to the feeling that keeps the beholder on the edge of his seat. Excellent classic movie!!!
The brilliance of Stig Järrel needs to be mentioned. He is so convincing in his performance that when you're leaving the movie-theater you might just see him coming around the corner with his wooden ruler...
Qui a tué Bambi? (2003)
Stylish thriller without climax
Espoo Ciné, 23.08.2003
This was the third screening in the world of this film.
I must say, Gilles Marchand knows how to make a stylish movie.
The plot is set to a hightechnology hospital somewhere in france. Isabelle is studying for her surgery-nurse diploma but is having difficulties with an illness that gives her dizzy-spells. She needs to have an operation. At the same time a Doctor is abusing patients sexually after giving them anasthetics. All the actors are very good and convincing, especially Laurent Lucas (Dr.Phillip) who makes a pretty good twisted doctor.
There is a small problem with this film. It's not the actors, it's not the script, It's not the cinematography. The problem is more in the direction and the visual style. There is not enough tension in the film to build up some kind of climax so the film ends up a bit flat in my mind. The music is a bit boring and doesn't really contribute to anything. The lack of visual horror kind of takes away the edge of the film.
Anyways, Marchand has made a quality film that is really worth seeing. His inspiration of hitchcock is pretty easy to see, of course with his own individual touch. When I asked him about which directors inspire him the most (he was attending Espoo Ciné) he mentioned Hitchcock and David Lynch. There are some dream sequences that are clearly lynch-inspired but they totally lack all the intensity that lynch beholds.
Good movie, not a classic in any way, but still good!
