Phoenix Rising (2022)
Gripping. Harrowing. Riveting.
So I wanted to recommend this series as being among the most powerful, compelling, gripping, riveting films I've watched in a long time. This film covers the circumstances surrounding and including the abuse of Evan Rachel Wood, and other women, by Marilyn Manson and their search for safety, healing, and justice.
I think this is an important film to watch to understand and see what family violence survivors can go through, how difficult it is to come forward about the abuse, the isolation, the pervading fear, shame and other lasting impacts of that abuse. The abuser creates another reality around themselves to normalize the abuse and render it acceptable to those present, a co-existing state of insanity. Harrowing.
Snake Eyes (1993)
A drama within a drama reflecting life
One of the first movies in a while to really drag me in, possibly thanks to the performances of the leads.
This feels REAL, and it's intense. A movie about the making of a movie where the drama is just as solid and visceral off-screen as it is on, but it's not some reality TV rubbish, it's a deeper reflection on life and relationships. That is, the movie that's depicted as being filmed, and the movie you're watching.. like layers of Inception.
This movie studies what people need to be whole, whether they're intrinsic or extrinsic, whether they need others, need drugs, need alcohol, money, god, or can be whole within themselves. The confusion that lust sows. The conflicts that occur when those needs are at odds between partners. The nature of need. How sometimes when we love someone, they become a part of us, and the separation becomes physical.
Finally a movie that was worth my time.
Alone in the Dark (2005)
Can a movie be more ridiculous?
I accidentally hired Alone in the Dark tonight. By accidentally, I mean, I forgot it was a Uwe Boll movie. Ridiculous "video game cool" special effects for the first half an hour. Well basically clichéd video game "camera angles" through the whole thing. The best I can say for it is that at moments it seemed almost an a-grade movie. I say 'movie' intentionally because I wouldn't give it 'film'. The couple of redeeming factors for me was a fit and muscled Christian Slater and 30 seconds of cleavage. Thats about it.
Now I know what everyones bitching about. But hey, I'll still see the Postal movie. He couldn't take the core humour of that, could he? Note: have only played a small amount of Alone in the Dark 2
