Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021)
Adorable, easy watch, and poetic
A24 has absolutely crushed it this year. This is the first year since the pandemic that we can return to theaters with more ease and the New York based studio delivered us Everything Everywhere All at Once and now Marcel. Both were so much better than I expected. We are given an adorable (and tiny) character on the big screen who graces us with innocence and a poignant outlook. This is genuinely a great family film, filled with sharp comedy, deep emotion, and astute observations on identity, community, and the fast paced world we live in. I recommend this one to all. Bring tissues.
I Know This Much Is True: Five (2020)
The Godfather Part II in one hour
Every episode of the the series has led to this fantastic addition to the generational saga of the Birdsey Family. Director Derek Cianfrance has shaped a companion piece to the second installment of The Godfather as we follow Dominick's Grandfather spearhead what we've heard is the "American Dream". In the previous episode we are unexpectedly revealed that the memoir handed down from Dominick's mother was finally translated. We are warned that we may not want to know the contents of the writings, and this proves to be painfully true. Not only is there some closure to the past of Dominick's mother and grandfather, there are new wounds open in its wake. Is the family cursed? Is history doomed to repeat itself? I am waiting with great anticipation of the finale episode. Once again we are given a masterclass performance from Mark Ruffalo as the inseparable twins and first rate filmmaking from Derek Cianfrance. This episode in particular brings most themes full circle and sets the stage for the conclusion. Bravo.
At Eternity's Gate (2018)
Pretentious
Willem Dafoe looks the part and delivers solid acting throughout the lengthy running time of the film. Minimal dialogue and story prevents viewers from really diving into the mind and personality of Vincent Van Gogh. What could have been some really beautiful cinematography was clouded by awful and distracting direction. Perhaps the director was trying to mimic the abstract vision of the subject himself and unfortunately this was the ultimate flaw of the film. The audience is left alienated from such a well-known artist.
Castle Rock: Romans (2018)
Major disappointment.
We've been strung along for 9 episodes to be left without any answers. What a shameful ending to a promising show.
