Night of the Demons (2009)
Not even bad enough to be funny
It's just about the same kind of drivel you get as an insomniac with the horror channel. At least those movies are often at least hilarious, this is just confusing. The only feeling this film will evoke is a vague sense of embarrassment for Edward Furlong, even he doesn't deserve to be associated with this.
The original is just a rehash of Evil Dead only with 200% more 80's, but was good fun. This remake falls short. The characters range from cardboard to annoying cardboard but this seems to be mostly to do with the poor script and direction, there are hints that these people are actually actors and not random people they found on the street.
If you haven't seen it, watch the original. This isn't worth your time.
Megan Is Missing (2011)
Not very interesting... then suddenly sadistic
Very strange film, Serious subject matter but feels more like a hallmark true-lifer on the dangers of the internet. The acting is hammy and it becomes entirely camp when mock footage of news shows get added to the mix. The only moment close to shocking at this stage is a short and slightly uncomfortable description of one girls sexual abuse suffered as a child.
....Then suddenly and with very little foreshadowing it turns into a disturbing snuff movie for 22 minutes. I usually do not spoil as much as this but this film needs it. A prolonged and brutal rape of a 13 year old in real time is probably something you should be aware of.
I give it 3 stars for it's ability to truly impart an emotional impact, even if it is disgust and for it's message to teenagers in regards internet stranger-danger.
Over-all, completely gratuitous.
The Tunnel (2011)
Best film in the shaky-cam horror genre
Very much a spiritual successor to the Blair Witch Project.
You could complain that it is a little definitive and doesn't really bring anything new but what it does do is finally perfect this style of film making. It builds upon what has worked before and makes very few mistakes.
The acting is solid and characters well defined without being stereotypes, the camera work and reactions remain believable throughout and the narrative makes the characters' behaviors seem natural. It reaches a level of realism that few other films of this type have come close to and with it comes a lot of tension and genuine scares.
Wholly recommended for anyone who has enjoyed films like this in the past and it might even win some converts.
