Evil Dead (2013)
A Decent Remake of the Horror Classic
"The Evil Dead" was a movie that shocked and scared millions. It was directed by the brilliant Sam Raimi who also directed one of my favorite horror movies: Drag me to Hell. Now some of the producers of the original came back to do a remake.
The Acting: For the most part the acting was pretty good. Jane Levy did a very good job at portraying her drug-riddled character looking for redemption. Shiloh Fernandez really made us believe that he was the BROTHER of Mia. My favorite character by far was Eric played by Lou Taylor Pucci. He had some great one-liners and was a great character until the "end".
The Plot: The main plot was about Mia. She has had a drug addiction for a while now, so her friends and brother take her on a "cleansing" trip to their cabin. There, they discover the book of the dead which unleashes EVIL.
Did it Scare: To put it simply, NO. It did not scare. The trailer was probably one of the most well made trailers that I've ever seen. The movie however did not live up to it. There were plenty of "jump-scares" as well as extremely gory scenes that were just made for people to cringe.
The Verdict: Evil Dead certainly was not as good as the original. However, the acting was decent with a great performance from Jane Levy, an interesting plot twist towards the end,and very impressive CGI. I give it a 6/10.
V/H/S (2012)
Surprising one
This is my first movie review and i am proud to say that this movie was the first i thought of when thinking of what to write my very 1st review here on IMDb. I have always loved horror movies and I've seen incredible and terrible horror movies. This was one of the incredibles.
The Acting: Flat. I can't say great things about the acting. The thing i will say is the use of profanity. Now you are probably thinking "Why the hell would it be a good idea to load 250 F- Bombs into 2 hours. Because it makes the acting so much more realistic. If you were in one of these tapes wouldn't you get a little urge to start dropping F-Bombs at the hands reaching at you through the walls?
The Plot: This film is about a group of criminals assigned by a mysterious person to break into someones home and steal some tapes. Its really that simple. The actually film itself is a few of the tapes that these guys found. And they are scary.
Scare Value: This was a movie i was walking into thinking that i was going to bail within the 1st tape. I didn't. The 1st tape wasn't only the scariest tape that i have EVER seen in a horror movie but it leaves you wanting more. This is what a horror movie(Or any movie for that matter) should do. I was also very impressed by the last tape and how it plays out in the end.I almost said to myself "I wish there could be a sequel"! Although if there would be a sequel......it would suck......badly.
The Verdict: VHS is a great movie for anyone who wants a real scare. It provides some well thought out plot lines, dialogue, and jump scares that actually get your heart pumping. I would recommend this to anyone out there who thinks nothing can scare them. I would definably put this in my Top 10 scary movies this year(Or possibly ever).
