Hagane no renkinjutsushi (2003)
Beautiful Series
I decided to start watching this show almost grudgingly. I thought it was going to be outright depressing and maybe even a chore to watch. Boy, was I ever wrong!
This is possibly one of the most well balanced animes I've seen. It's sad at some points, but it's a very uplifting series. It doesn't dodge realistic problems-- many of the problems of wrong-doing and corruption can be related to in real life. At the same time, it maintains a demeanor all its own with a nice splash of liveliness and some excellent quotable lines. The main protagonists are less than sullen. They're lovable and endearing, and you quickly become absorbed in cheering on their victories and hoping the best for them in their adventures. It gives a lot of meaning to the importance of one's family.
With seriousness, humor, action, an engrossing style and such a unique cast of characters, this is an easy series to get into. I highly recommend it! :D
Pinocchio (1940)
An Animation Masterpiece
Recently, I resumed my goal to watch all of the Disney feature films. In particular, I wanted to be more familiar with the classics from Walt's time, and began mentally listing off the movies I hadn't seen or couldn't remember very well.
Pinocchio was one of them.
So, I popped down to the video store and rented the DVD. My goodness. I could not have been more impressed with it. There are so many 'perfect' moments in that movie. Truly Disney created animation magic like no other. The plot retained points from the book it was based on, but gave the main character a whole new demeanor. Naive and curious, Pinocchio repeatedly stumbles into trouble, while Jiminy Cricket, acting as his 'conscience', tries to keep him away from it by teaching him right from wrong. The mood and overall feel to the story is warm and very cozy, especially at the beginning, and you get used to it right away. The characters are filled with the charm Disney is known for.
I could go on about the positive attributes to the atmosphere, but it goes so much deeper than that. Pinocchio differs from other Disney movies in the way that no villains are truly punished for their crimes. It's almost truthful, really. Not every crook pays for his wrong-doings.
In addition, there are less than cheerful moments. The scene on Pleasure Island when Lampwick becomes a donkey is actually scary. The use of perspective is very clever on many occasions, and the whole movie is very atmospheric in some way or other. It somehow maintains the feel I got from the original book while giving the characters Disney sweetness. It's honestly worth a watch.
Zatch Bell! (2003)
Great Series! =D
Reminiscent of shows such as Pokemon, Zatch Bell features a lot of versus battles. The storyline isn't hard to pick up on. While in England, Professor Takamine comes upon a boy in the middle of a forest, dying. The professor saves his life, and the boy, whose name turns out to be Zatch Bell, thereafter feels indebted to him, insisting he repay the favor. The professor sends Zatch to Japan to meet his son, Kiyo-- a fourteen year old genius who's about as arrogant as they get. Zatch's job is to help Kiyo learn to make friends. However, Zatch retains almost nothing of his memory from before he was rescued by Kiyo's father, and thus Kiyo ends up entangled in a bit of a mess upon discovering who and what Zatch really is...
This show is a lot of fun. It's not perfect, but the characters are entertaining, and the plot becomes more engaging the further into the series you go. The author (of the manga series that this show was based on) has sort of a strange sense of humor, and it even shows through in the toned-down English version of the series. The (English) rating is 8+, so you can't expect much in the line of blood or violence, even despite the battles, and the show in itself seems to be a tad bit notorious for the reuse of animation sequences where possible, but all in all, it's entertaining. :)
Sonic X (2003)
Sonic X is awsome!!!
I think Sonic X is an awsome show! The animation is stunning and well-done, but I can't exactly say the English voice actors are as good as the Japanese ones. Tails sounds like Ash Ketchem from Pokemon...*shudders* They could've done a bit better than that... But anyway, the show is great. Slow with the action, but by the third episode its up an' runnin'!!! w00t Sonic!!! Give this show a go cuz it is UP OVER AND GONE its so good!

Sonikku za hejjihoggu (1996)
Greatness Achieved!
This movie is awesome! Great animation, good plot, awesome characters...nice and true to the personalities. The big flaw (like on Sonic X) is the English dubbing. If you have the chance, watch it in Japanese too to see my point. But the movie is great. Watch it. I suggest it in both languages, though...
