Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Cool to see McGregor back but ...
This falls pretty flat. The writing is incredibly predictable. It feels a lot like an early noughties action film and borrows all the tropes that became tropes years ago. There are tonnes of plot holes and nonsensicalities. For example, how can Obi-Wan be living in a cave working in indentured servitude in the desert for ten years as a Jesus-like figure just to watch over young Luke Skywalker only to have an incredibly brief conversation with Luke's uncle in which the uncle immediately tells him to sod off? Are you telling me that Obi-Wan never checked to see if the Uncle even wanted him there? Because Obi-Wans response is to leave Luke and he doesn't hesitate about his safety that he just agonised over in torment for a decade.
Obi-Wan starts out like how they ruined Luke in the new films. As a flaccid, ruined man with no fight left in him. He hasn't practiced his Jedi powers since almost killing Anakin and we don't actually know why. He refuses to help anybody in need in case the Empire find him.
Then there's Leia. An incredibly irritating child character I don't know why they didn't decide to have the series start when she's in her mid-teens and therefore, bareable. I did think of what Lucas said when people complained about the '00s films - something like "why are adults getting upset about films made for children?" At first, I accepted this as a truth and tried to ignore the irritating child character who's in most of the scenes under the assumption that she was there for the children watching. Soon enough, the show definitely became not child friendly in pretty shocking fashion as Darth Vader appears and starts to break the necks of an innocent family for no apparent reason. So, the kids for adults entertainment? I think not.
The Ridiculous 6 (2015)
Up in the list of most terrible films I've ever seen.
This film is truly terrible.
Firstly, let's talk about the script. There is not one ounce of wit or intelligence in the humour here. It's actually so stupid that it constantly borders on racist, even for somebody with a less PC centre. The jokes feel like they're from the '90s, before deliberate political incorrectness was swapped for subtlety and charm. It's like watching a film being released 20 years after it was made. This film is NOT funny. Maybe if you're below the age of 12 or you've never watched a good comedy you'll find it amusing. There are three nipple jokes, poo jokes and a hoard of cheap modern jokes that don't fit in with the time-period, completely bringing you out of the story every time they're spoken.
As could be expected from an Adam Sandler film, the acting is dreadful. There's no attempt from the actors to provide something more than what the script reads, and everyone plays the blandest characters they possibly could.
I don't think this movie warrants much more than that. If you have any taste. Don't watch it.
