Slyozy kapali (1983)
Very unusual film but essential viewing.
I enjoy watching Soviet Cinema (including all of Daneliya's films, Mimino being my all time favourite Soviet film) but have never come across as odd movie as this (not his usual style), certainly not a happy film, and could be described as an outright gloomy narrative permeating virtually every moment (along with acute social observations, very acute).
Incredibly haunting music, compelling performances but for me the brilliance of this film is its portrayal of average Soviet life back in the early 80's - it is like somebody has taken a slice out of the time period and bottled it, for that alone I am eternally grateful, for the insights are priceless.
Much underrated in my opinion and a gem of late Soviet cinema, Evgeniy Leonov again shows his brilliance.
Gisaengchung (2019)
A masterpiece
What can I say, I'll keep it quick.
1. I knew within a few minutes this film was going to be excellent, we all have that feeling when we know if something is going to be exceptional.
2. Some of the dialogue was so hilarious I was literally crying with laughter, bordering on the genius some of the interactions were incredible, and that was just the subtitled version, in Korean I am sure it would have been mind-blowing.
3. It's the kind of film you will never forget, it is so truly unique I am fearing a Hollywood remake.
4. Cinematography was often breathtaking.
5. Acting was so good I'd call it perfect.
Nelyubov (2017)
Soaked in pathos
In many ways this film is so Russian that unless you are Russian or have spent a considerable time in Russia you may miss many of the subtler parts of this film - recurring motifs - but this does not detract from an absolutely intelligent and realistic film.
Heavy on symbolism I remained enthralled throughout, a deeply original and emotive work that will resonate in the mind long after viewing. A Masterpiece.
It deserves no less than the maximum 10/10.
Dunkirk (2017)
Twisted and completely unshocking. Terrible Film.
Within minutes I realized what a terrible mistake I made made going to watch this film. It seemed liked a sub-par TV series with no atmosphere and wooden props.
So many mistakes. Spitfire running out of fuel and then managing to down a Stuka bomber and then fly past Kenneth Branagh (you could even predict this moment seconds before it was that trite). Talking about poor old Kenneth spent most of the film wandering up and down a pier... nice work if you can get it!
Stukas bombing soldiers who remarkably all stayed in one piece after being hit. In reality many of them would have been in seriously bad shape and not many would have been in one piece. The horror would be unimaginable... may be this was for the certificate but it was just so unrealistic.
Spitfire canopy stuck... oh yes.. it had to happen didn't it! It's like in plot development somebody came up with that bright idea (not)... entirely predictable.
Characters were so wooden that no sympathy was allowed to develop.
And Germans bombing clearly marked hospital ships. I find that piece of revisionist history sickening. Even the Luftwaffe would have court martialled and hung any such offender.
A terrible film.
Na lepom plavom Dunavu (2008)
Quirky, odd movie...
A Musical Comedy Drama centered around an odd group of Ships crew (Central/East European) and Passengers (Western) with the dialogue mainly English but often German and Serbian (indeed I also viewed the film with Bulgarian embedded subtitles).
Enjoyable hour and a half especially for the performance of Tim Seyfi as the Boss from nowhere (with some great lines!) and Jelena Gavrilovic (simply stunning) but that isn't to negate the rest of the cast as they all were quite superb.seem to thoroughly enjoy themselves (and I enjoyed watching them) in a light hearted way.
I really enjoyed this film and look forward to seeing some more gems of Serbian cinema.
