Bones and All (2022)
Do people just buy into the hype?
I mean how else could you explain a poorly directed, badly shot, terribly paced, shoddily acted farce? I might understand if it was an allegory for something, I might even get it if was a genuinely romantic film, but it was neither of those!
So I have to ask, are the reviews here fake? What in the blue hell was this?!
Badly scripted, characters without motivation,, why is it set in the 80s?
You might even argue I didn't get it. What's there to get? I wasn't expecting wall to wall action or a zombie flick. I went in blind, I knew the directors work, I thought this will be promising. Instead I got a flat paced, dry, unengaged, pointless flick. I don't understand why this was made. Who greenlit this pile of rubbish?
True Justice (2010)
Might be the greatest TV show of all time
This might just be the greatest TV show of all time. Right up there with Boardwalk Empire, Sopranos and Sesame Street. I can't praise it enough. Watch it and it will engross you, educate you and most of all change your life. I cannot stress the effort and level of writing and professionalism that has gone into this well crated TV show. Producers will be standing in awe in decades to come, to understand how every aspect of this show melded together to create what is perhaps a masterpiece of it's era. The cinematography. The beauty, the dialogue, the gratitious nudity, amazing feat. Whatever you do today, just watch this.
Detainee 001 (2021)
Barely scratched the surface
This was an opportunity for American TV to have an introspection into empire, 9/11 and more importantly how "one of their boys" decided to go to Afghanistan and forensically understand his pathology and motives. None of that was done! This documentary just told us what we already know, instead the documentary thinks it's clever to keep repeating "why". Don't ask us, the audience, "why" give us answers.
The King (2019)
Excellent. Very captivating
At 2 and half hours, you barely feel bored. The pacing and the production values all hit the spot. Tight script, great camera work, excellent performances all culminate to make one of the greatest films of 2019.
Messiah (2020)
A masterpiece
I am not usually compelled to write reviews unless there's division. This has, and will divide audiences. There are no answers, and there is no traditional pacing. That's what makes it a masterpiece. The cinematography, performances, music and script are superb. The script particularly is so nuanced and well drawn out, that I'm assuming the performances were easy to pull off.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Good fun
I have no idea why this is getting mixed reviews. But it's such good fun, great laughs, great horror and lots of amazing effects. I mean it's formulaic stuff, but executed well.
The Fighter (2010)
Awful
I'll start with the positive. Good production values and some decent cinematography but all in all it was just a very run of the mill predictable film. All the stereotypes are there, guy at the lowest point of his life, works his way up, has family problems, work on his personal life and professional life and is a great success. I thought Christian Bale put a decent effort in, but even with all that weight loss the performance just wasn't believable. One other good thing that I thought was good(for those who think I am being unfair) was the dialogue. It sounded very believable and real. I just didn't care for the characters, they were far too cardboard and out of a storyboard.
Honestly, you can guess what happens next. No, I didn't miss the point of this movie.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Haunting, brutal yet meaningful
I watched this a day ago and it is still haunting me and disturbing me. It's disturbing me because this movie will take you to the darkest places of your mind.
Also, just to clarify. This movie is EXTREMELY VIOLENT. As someone who is pretty immune to film violence and desensitised. This made me squirm, and that's a good thing. It means I am not completely desensitised and more importantly it means that violence is horrible. Whether it's a serial killer doing it or a man on a seemingly righteous rampage.
So critic complain about the violence? I will tell you why. Because they don't understand it. This isn't 'Kiss the girls'. This is real, the very very scenes are extreme and shows torture of a young lady in graphic ways. Why graphic? Because it's important we feel and understand the revenge of the main protagonist. That my friends makes it more disturbing. Not the violence but the fact that we're now involved in the revenge and you could argue almost complicit. As the revenge gets more and more brutal the director clinically removes us from the revenge aspect and we get more distant about the actions. The lines between right and wrong get blurred. I won't reveal the ending but I can't think of a better ending of a movie.
Overall, this movie will become a classic of the serial killer genre. It's what a serial killer movie should be like. Utterly brutal, unforgiving and yet very moral.
Oasiseu (2002)
Stays with you..
I'm not often compelled to write on IMDb. The film stays with you days after watching it. It's so heart-wrenchingly beautiful. There are scenes in it that just make you cry out loud and some that will make you laugh out loud. It's one of the rare movies where the director and cast are just working together in one beautiful unison, in perfect harmony. A masterclass in movie-making. The actress is so amazing playing a cerebal palsy afflicted girl, it's not patronising, it's the most human part I have seen in years. The actor is also extremely gifted, little nuances in his acting make his part breath more realisitically. Speaking of realism, this movie packs a punch. Get ready.
The Prestige (2006)
I felt conned...
I mean you're supposed to feel conned that was the concept of the movie. What I felt conned by was the shoddy script/dialogue and 2D characters - must you become a drunk cliché when your lovers dies looking all mad eyed with the long hair and all??? Must you act 'ave a cuppa tea gvnor!' Scarlett?? I swear I heard you say 'like totally!' But most of all, what really made me mad what really insulted was the end twist! You mean to tell me you spent the whole movie working towards something that was so obvious!! We saw it half an hour during the movie, we guessed it in the relationships! We saw it written in the very in your face dramatic irony! We saw it as obvious as all my exclamation marks! There wasn't even an attempt at diversion. It was poor. The way the movie hid the twist was the the same way as Dick Dastardly plotted his evil doings.
The fact that this movie has already gone into the top 250 shows that our audience can be fooled by anything. Get The Thin Red Line into the top 250 and then maybe, maybe I'll talk with some respect.
Love + Hate (2005)
Raw and Unflinching
I saw this about 2 years ago at a preview screening in Pinewood Studios, not knowing what to expect, I was totally gobsmacked. As a pakistani Muslim myself I saw comparisons to Ae fond Kiss but they were dismissed within half an hour, this makes Ae fond kiss look like a bollywood production. The raw, real nature of how that community acts back home was so real that it was almost uncomfortable watching it. Very rarely can a movie capture a moment in time that surpasses the realm of celluloid. Watching the interactions with the brother and his issues really struck home, there were moments where I was in tears. I couldn't control myself. Also, in terms of photography it was top notch. Perhaps on the greatest films of 2005/2006. Would recommend everyone to watch.
The only let down was at the end of the preview screening when the people asking for feedback from the movie did not ask the only 2 pakistanis in the cinema(me and my friend).Asked everyone else, except for us! How ironic was that!
Mabel (2005)
Dry
Saw this in BAFTA in London. Wasn't great, wasn't rubbish either. It's was just, bland. Story of an old woman reminiscing her past times with a medium older man lover and how he got imprisoned. You know trying to be an existential love story but without the flow, it felt like the rest of team just weren't feeling it. Good cinematography, okay score, for 20 minutes you need something that just grabs you, this just didn't grab my attention. I suppose it was too feminine for me. However, this movie was for potential investors to look at so they can invest in a cool criminal heist movie. Anyway Wyndham Price if you're listening, take heed to this one thing - always let the camera do what it naturally does, don't interfere.
