Cherish (2002)
One of those unique films you wish you could watch again for the first time
Someone recommended this film and I didn't know anything about the plot, the soundtrack, the actors, etc. And I LOVED all the surprises. This film is loaded with great retro relics, including a couple of roller skating scenes. This is one of those films that goes hand-in-hand with Office Space, The Secretary or Donnie Darko for their unique perspectives. Too bad scripts like this are so few and far between.
Eight Days a Week (1997)
Looks dumb, but it isn't
I don't know why the producers decided to market this as another teen flick, with the typical cliche box cover, etc. This movie is actually really well crafted and really well written. I'm pretty picky about the movies I watch and I really enjoyed this one, despite thinking I was going to hate it. The dialogue is very witty -- very Clerks-esque, if you like that kind of style.
Box of Moonlight (1996)
The best rental I've watched in years!
I admit it. I was walking along the aisle of my local video store, simply trying to find a "sixth" movie so I'd get a better deal (rent five, get one free). I spotted this and rented it simply because of the actors and because it had two thumbs up (not always a good indicator, but thought I'd try anyway). I didn't know what to expect. With a title like, "Box of Moonlight," I thought this would be another contrived "touching" movie. I was wrong. This is an extremely funny movie - a great dark comedy. Amazing cast. Extremely smart. The first scene felt a little slow, but the plot turns within the first 10 minutes. You never know where the writer is going to go next (which I like). It was a surprise from scene to scene. This movie is now one of my favorites. I've watched it a few times since I accidentally stumbled upon it and enjoyed it more and more each time. If you do anything tonight, rent this movie.
