Viva Zapatero! (2005)
Interesting view of Italy.
This film wants to be a view of the Italian political scene. While everybody knows the feelings of Miss Guzzanti which should be fully respected, one wonders why she claims that in Italy there is a type of dictatorship if she was allowed to make such a movie.
I watched the movie by mistake and because I have a hobby in politics found it interesting, but if you are not "anti-Berlusconian" like Guzzanti, this is a waste of time and money. It shows Italy in a complete bias way and seems that there is no freedom of speech. It shows that Berlusconi is always bad and that the left is always good.
I don't suggest the movie to anyone interested in Italian culture.
Elephant (2003)
Strange movie.
I watched Elephant not really because I was attracted at the resume or because friends told me that it was good but because of all the articles and news-reports they made on it. I was quite shocked, the movie is very slow and presents you different characters from a variety of different situations and you really don't know where the movie wants to bring you. During the film you constantly have names of characters appearing on the screen, as if one part was finished and a new part was about to start.
As of the beginning it gives you an idea of characters that study in a big school and are left alone in all parts of their life and they actually have to play the role of the adults. At the beginning we see a drunken father and the son that needs to bring him back home. All characters seem to get easily in trouble although they don't seem to mind that.
There are long moments in which the camera follows the characters from behind and makes you understand how big the school is and how lonely these students are. They live in a very lonely world and it seems hard for them to be understood and accepted by others.
Two boys who were constantly offended by others take some guns and kill as many people as possible inside the school. These are apparently gay (maybe just experimenting) and are constantly insulted by all the other students. They are always alone, their parents are never around and they want to be understood, seen and for once be stronger than the others by doing this attack. They possibly do this because of jealousy, they are jealous of other people's friends, girlfriends, who knows?
What can be said is that I personally did not like this movie as it was slow and you could not understand where it was leading you. What I think is that after watching it you don't really know if you liked it or not, you just know that you've just seen a strange movie.
Some other strange things are the following:
_ the names of many actors have been kept as the names of the characters;
_ most actors come from nowhere and few information is available on them and it does not seem they will be making any more movies;
_ the whole way the movie was shot is just strange.
If this movie will be remembered, people will remember it for how strange it is.
Che ne sarà di noi (2004)
Quite unique.
Che Ne Sara' di Noi I thought was a quite unique film. Everyone goes through the summer that comes after leaving high school and everybody feels that they are going towards the "unknown", that can be going towards university, college or work.
This movie talks about 3 friends that while on vacation ask themselves: what will happen to us? (che ne sara' di noi).
The movie at the beginning is not dramatic at all, it's actually quite funny in presenting the 3 different friends that come from 3 totally different backgrounds. After the Italian "maturita'" exam (the final high school exam) one of them pushes to go on vacation on a Greek island as his lover has just gone. When they get there they somehow start to change and slowly it seems that their friendship is dying.
The ending is quite open, they all take different paths that somehow makes them finish their teen age and makes them start having responsibilities.
The movie is very nice and I hope it will be translated in English although I doubt it.
