Role Models (2008)
Loved it!
I saw this movie at a free screening last night, and by the time the movie was over, I was hoarse because I laughed so much. And these weren't just little laughs, but big guffaws. The whole audience was laughing through the whole movie. The previews are funny, but this is one instance where they don't show the only funny parts of the movie in the previews. Paul Rudd is a great actor, in general, and he really shines in this movie. The movie is hysterical, raunchy, and touching. Kudos to Rudd, Wain, and Merino. I really hope that this movie gains a lot of ground through the great buzz it is currently getting. It deserves that buzz.
30 Days of Night (2007)
Excellent!
This is the first truly scary movie of this year's horror crop. I just got back from seeing this, and it was the most intense movie going experience I have had in a long time. Good acting? Check. Good plot? Check. Scary as hell vampires? Check? Heart in your throat moments of terror? Double check. This movie was non-stop terrifying from just moments in. Even through all the terror, though, there were very poignant moments throughout. The most poignant was probably the ending scene which sort of gives new many to the phrase, "ashes to ashes." But equally touching was the death of a character who had been turned, but wanted to die to join his already dead family. His death is heard off screen. Amidst all the blood and gore, he managed to have a dignified death scene. I don't really have much to quibble about. In fact, I can't think of anything at all that I didn't like about this movie.
Firefly (2002)
Yet another example of how badly Fox sucks
I remember when this series first aired. I thought the first episode was great, but before it could become appointment TV, it was gone. Poof. I later read that not only did Fox only air a handful of episodes, but that the episodes were aired out of order. Smooth move, Fox. I recently saw Serenity and thought it rocked. Thankfully, Sci Fi now airs Firefly from time to time, and I've now see roughly half of the filmed episodes. The show was, in a word, brilliant. I totally bought this universe that Whedon created. And I love each and every member of the crew of Serenity, especially Wash, Zoe, and Jayne (the complete idiot with a heart of a somewhat gold like substance. . .okay, maybe it's just copper, but he's not all bad, that's the point). It joins the ranks of Undeclared and Arrested Development (which is barely clinging to life at the moment) as Fox shows that died before their time. At least with Firefly we got Serenity, and the slim possibility of sequels to that movie. Still though, this show should have been on the air much longer.
Two Days (2003)
Paul Rudd is an amazing actor
I didn't really see this as a movie about suicide. Instead, I saw it as a movie about life and rebirth. The ending wasn't nearly as ambiguous to me as it was to some. In the end, I think Paul realized that he actually did want to live despite the pain that life dishes out a lot of the time. I watched this movie three or four times just so I could pick up some of the nuances. I didn't notice the first time that Paul was actually the one who got the door opened at the end (I must have been distracted because that's clearly what happened). Paul lived those last two days as if they were his last, and I think he realized he actually enjoyed the living. At the end, I saw a character who wanted to escape, but this time, not necessarily through suicide. Instead, he escapes to the ocean (it's less depressing on that side of town, a crew member had informed him)to ponder what to do now that he'd decided to live. That was my interpretation anyway. In any case, I thought it was fantastic movie. Paul Rudd gave one of the best performances of his career. I think that he's one of the best actors of my generation.
Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
Watch this movie
Paul Rudd's temper tantrum is reason enough to watch this hilarious movie. This is a spoof of summer camp movies, and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. It made me laugh out loud. Funniest moments:
1. The temper tantrum. Hi-larious
2. "Meet me at the picnic table in 10 seconds."
3. The trip to town--I think this may have been the moment I realized this was not your ordinary summer camp film.
4. Every scene with Chris Meloni.
5. Andy's problems with kids and water.
Relax, have a beer, and watch this movie.
