The Interpreter (2005)
Nicole and Sean are part of the sacred flock of moviedom.
Nicole and Sean are part of the sacred flock of moviedom. They have had bad movies, but no bad acting. They are excellent in this one that deals with the Black Continent and its ethnic conflicts, with cities we seldom see on maps, where news is like rumors of cadavers decomposing in the place of the massacres, of warrior children who learn early to shoot and kill with complete indifference, cities destroyed by the brutality of those who are fighting for the power, with dictatorships that are starting on the slow road to democracy. Although this violence is a result of the conflict, we see little of it on screen. This is a story of intrigue that moves along at a frantic pace in the halls of the UN. The climax a third of the way through the film is aborted, only to be revived more powerfully at the end. It left us with a feeling that something was missing, but this does not discredit the movie which is nearly entirely set in the marvelous city of New York, whose rich backgrounds are found without searching.
What is it about? Silvia Broome (Kidman) is a stunningly beautiful White African. She works as an interpreter in those offices, thanks to her education. She masters various languages and dialects to provide dependable translations of the African ethnic groups which, incapable of resolving their differences, bring them to the UN. Following one session, she overhears an open mike and a discussion about a plot by two groups fighting for power, to kill the dictator, Zuwanie (Earl Cameron). When Broome learns of this plot, the big security machine of the Big Apple goes into motion, impressively, and generates enough tension to set the audience on the edge of its seats. The soundtrack is appropriate, and the camera work efficiently reinforces the story. FBI Agent Tobin Seller (Penn), in a rather rough encounter with the interpreter, decides to investigate her. He is thrown for a loop upon discovering that she is the daughter of those who were massacred by the same dictator they backed in Africa, while the silent battle between the terrorists and the police continues. Tension rises, especially with the shot of the bus explosion in the heart of downtown. The director has the last word, and expert Pollack knows his work well. He moves the strings of his team at will, achieving an action movie of good quality.
Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
Excellent Production
After having demonstrated his great abilities with his Oscar-winning hit movie, "Gladiator", Scott now knows how to handle mass scenes in big productions. Even in this epic that does not seem to have a definite structure, with a story line that does not grab the viewer, Scott still captivates via an excellent production. He appears to be more concerned with the photography, cameras up on cranes, and aerial shots for an accurate view of the great battles with pertinent editing. He is very careful with the acting, the music score is excellent, the costumes entirely credible, as are the settings with backgrounds of the prodigious Arab architecture, settings scrupulously chosen or created, that transport us to the Middle East in 1184.
Being Julia (2004)
terribly stupid and boring
what is new in this film? an "old woman" that fall in love with a young man,a fancy one, that feel cant do anything, because she is a start, and the indifference of her husband, a woman immature that repeat he same lines in her every day live to many other people, incapable to keep a serious relation ship with anyone.
but of course been able to see Annette was enough reason to by a ticket, even the story and lines aren't new or important at all, must be because the translation into Spanish may lost the meaning of ( what must be jokes )at the first half part i was ready to go, but after that, gets a little better. of course the acting was really good, also the atmosphere of 30' but the English sense of humor--in this film--it wont fit, catch. the Latin American taste, in my personal opinion.
Cero y van 4 (2004)
The Awful reality of Mexico City
Even, still a lot of people leave in peace, nobody ignore this situation This is a real good film that goes from, corruption, betray, infidelity, extreme misery, nothing we do not see daily on the top news, from the tears and pain mixed with hilarious and blaspheme, from the tycoons to the ones don't even have money to buy a minimum medicine for a very sick daughter, of course you may go to this city, and don't notice a thing, but the story could be perfectly real, cruel but good film, acting from regular to good, rhitmen enough to keep audience awake, if you don't have chicken hart, must see this new Mexican movie (just in case...English is not my language)
