Velma (2023– )

Dont expect Scooby Doo

People keep saying how this isnt like Scooby Doo. And I have to agree, its nothing like Scooby Doo. I expected to hate this but once I saw this as more of a Scooby Doo parody, it made sense of it to me. Fred is over the top. But I was never aware that Fred had a personality to begin with. Same with Daphne, so they took creative license with them. I guess you could be mad if Velma doesnt live up to your picture of her, but again, I never had much of an opinion of that character anyway. I only ever watched that show for Scooby and Shaggy. Neither of those characters are in this so.... I dunno. I find myself laughing a few times per episode, and I am generally amused by them. There are jokes in there that arent meant for me and they just go by. The way I see it, there is a ton of garbage shows out there and this one keeps bringing me back when new episodes drop. Im up to ep8 now. My advice, in your mind, watch it as a parody and not a serious show. Thats how it feels to me.

The Hyperions (2022)

Gave me Wes Andersen vibes

This movie was decent. I enjoyed it but it could be less than gripping at times. The humor did not seem central, yet I found myself chuckling at little things all throughout. The super hero angle is peripheral to the story as well. There wont be any Hyperiverse from this I dont think. It is a strange little world with strange characters that made me think of the Tennenbaums. It was pretty unique in its own right though and that is always refreshing. I think I may have to give it another watch in a couple weeks to see if it grows on me or not. Bottom line, I would recommend it, going in without high expectations.

Paper Girls (2022)

Compelling and rich

You do not serve this series by slathering your politics all over it. That goes for the woke brigade. As for the anti woke gang, this is an interesting story, well told. The actors all give fine performances and this is all accomplished without beating you over the head and punching you in the face with a political agenda, as it should be. The story just happens and draws you in. Im hoping for at least another season or two. I never read the comic, but the people mad that its not as good as the comic are as obnoxious as people obsessed with telling you how much better the book was. The book is ALWAYS better than the screen adaptation.

The Sandman (2020 Podcast Series)

A weird, wild, unexpected pleasure.

I kept getting the feeling that this show would step out of my interest at many points. Yet I kept eagerly hitting next episode after each. I will watch this one again now that Im familiar with its style and I expect I will enjoy it even more. It was a weird one and I found it compelling.

Prey (I) (2022)

Good film, poor CGI

All the actors did a really good job in this. There were some tropes through the movie that were eyerolling plug n play junk. I probably would have given 8 or 9 if the animal CGI wasnt so jarringly bad in so many scenes. Which is funny because all the predator CGI was great. Overall entertaining and worth watching.

Joker (I) (2019)

Pretty blown away

I was expecting a weird movie for the sake of being weird. Something trying to be interesting by being unconventional. Well, it definitely was weird and unconventional, but this story was well imagined and put together. Told darkly, as you would expect from the dark world of Batman. Loads of dark comedy you will feel guilty about laughing for. Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal. At great imagining of the creation of Joker.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Dont waste your time and money

I will say kids would probably like it. This was not a good movie. There was a total lack of effort in the writing process. Very checklist. They came up with a long checklist of things they decided needed to be in the movie, then one weekend, decided to string them all together with a script. Very lazy, like a rough draft that never got refined with many needed rewrites and never waivering from that checklist. Im really disappointed. So much potential. They really need to start giving these projects to writers who care about making a good movie with a good story. There were a couple parts that were somewhat humorous, mostly eye rolling. What are the 3 things a buisness needs to be sucessful, location location location. What are the 3 things TV/movies need, WRITING WRITING WRITING. It all starts with the writing kids. Learn this if you plan on going into entertainment.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

This movie is not a 9.1

The fanatics are out in force. This is a really good movie. This is not a 9.1. I would expect to see the user rating for this one at upper 7 lower 8. I gave it an 8. Dont get me wrong, they did a great job of coordinating a complex story with so many different components all coming together that really should have been a mess. And as far as the movie being too long, I didnt feel that while watching it. I was surprised when I looked at the time after. I dont know that someone could watch this without being familiar with the backstory of several previous movies and enjoy it as much.

Super Troopers 2 (2018)

The plot is terrible, but it doesnt need to be good

I went and saw this as a double feature with the original. Hadnt watched the original in years but it was fun to see again. The second one is just like the first. Bad plot, funny movie. I laughed harder than I have in the theater in a long time. The comedy is at times, brilliant, stupid, uncomfortable, memberberry, but it is pretty constant throughout with making you laugh. My stomach still hurts a bit. Anyone who is bashing this movie in a review....I dont know what they expected, but this one is worth a watch. If you liked the first one, you should like this one.
