Day Shift (2022)
Surprisingly fun comedy with some great action
I don't usually watch movies like this: big names, silly jokes, over-the-top action. Not my thing at all, and I only started watching it accidentally (well played, Netflix). Yet, I somehow enjoyed it, and here's why (I think).
The two protagonists have great chemistry, and the characters are likable and fun to watch. In some ways, it reminded me of Men in Black. The dialogue is actually really good for this kind of movie. While it's still a bit cheesy, and not all the jokes are laugh-out-loud, it manages to stay away from being cringe-worthy. I was very surprised that I didn't roll my eyes even once, even though with this kind of movie, it should be a normal and frequent occurrence. One of the biggest strengths is that it doesn't take itself too seriously at any point. Whether it's dialog, fights or car chases.
Now, I have to admit that the action was absolutely top-notch, even though I don't care about action movies much. There's something appealing and fun about the comical brutality of expertly choreographed fights in Day Shift. In a way, it's like a mix of John Wick, The Boys, and From Dusk till Dawn. The usage of drones for car chase scenes makes them feel fresh and exhilarating.
The overall story was simple but effective. I actually liked that certain things were taken for granted and not over-explained. However, this movie is not about the story or world-building but about its fun characters. For instance it has Snoop Dogg with a cowboy hat and a minigun, and that certainly counts for something.
Overall, I would recommend this movie, and that says a lot coming from me, trust me. Especially for people who love some crazy fantasy action with a good dose of comedy.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Boring
One of the most boring and ridiculous movies I've seen in a while. Impossible to care about any of the characters. Some lengthy scenes absolutely unnecessary. Visuals and sound are messy and annoying to say the least.
Causalidad (2021)
Gripping thriller done in one single shot.
First of all let me just say that I am baffled by anyone giving it 1/10. I have no idea what those people have seen but it certainly wasn't this movie. Depending on your taste in movies I can understand people rating somewhere between 6 and 10. But ratings lower than that seem to come from people that truly hated this on a personal level, for god knows what reason.
The only thing I can think of that would cause people to really dislike Causality is their short attention spans. They seem to struggle to focus on anything that doesn't have some action, care chases, fights, etc. Every five minutes. In a addition they seem to get lost when the storyline is not simple to follow.
When I normally see very polarizing reviews on IMDB, I know I am in for a treat. Most of the time one of the main reasons for this huge divide is that some people just cannot handle slow, atmospheric movies. This movie seems to be no different.
If it comes to the movie itself it is certainly not perfect. But it is a great thriller nonetheless. I love the fact that for the first half of it I was confused about what is actually going on and who are the main protagonists. And this is clearly done on purpose. The best part is that at the end everything makes sense.
The direction was excellent as was acting. It's worth noting that the whole movie was done in one single shot. And this is not just a gimmick as it makes the whole experience very immersive.
All in all a solid 8/10 from me. I was considering giving it 10/10 just to offset those ridiculous 1/10 but I decided to be better than this.
Cosmos (2019)
One of the few Sci-Fi movies that mainly focus on the Sci.
I've seen many people complaining that the positive 10/10 reviews are fake. Mainly based on the fact that it is their first review on IMDB.
So be warned, this is my first review here as well, despite the fact that I've been using IMDB ratings and reviews to choose movies I watch for nearly 20 years. Never before I was so compelled to finally create my first review until I watched Cosmos and saw the ranking of this movie with many reviewers giving it 1/10. And I have a feeling that this is the reason we can see others doing the same.
Now, I totally get why many people would not like this movie. It is not a movie for a general public. The target audience is people that like sci-fi where the emphasis is mainly on the science part. In addition, you have to like story driven movies that are slow and pretty much with no action whatsoever (no car chases, fights, monsters, etc.). There isn't even a villain in this movie really. And all the characters are very likable and as a viewer I cared for all of them.
So as some mentioned, this is a movie mainly for nerds and geeks of science, astronomy and space in general. So if you ever cared at all about any of the aforementioned topics and don't care about Hollywood style action, you are in for a massive treat. It is so nice to see bunch of scientist and engineers not behaving like morons (look up Prometheus if you want to know what I mean).
For me personally this movie is definitely in my top 10 sci-fi movies of all times. I had goosebump at the very end of it.
One thing also worth mentioning is that this movie has to have on of the best ration of budget vs quality I've ever seen. Everything from script, cinematography, lighting, acting, etc. Is really top notch. If there is one thing that could be improved IMHO is editing. Mainly just to make it a bit shorter and concise.
So from my nerdy heart too all the people that created this movie: Thank you and bloody well done!
