Invasion (2021)
Not if you're interested in instant self-gratification
Love this show. The way the 5 sub-plots develop and seamlessly connect. Directing, performances, score, for me are all stunning. The jump scares made me jump. So well done.
Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
Intense and disturbing
While I acknowledge a legitimate feminist perspective for a review of this film, as well as one where people saw it for cheap thrills and were disappointed, I went without expectations and haven't read the books.
I simply found this film very intense in terms of the chemistry between Christian and Anna, and saw it as a story about a deeply hurt and disturbed man, and a woman who fell in love with him and was desperate to uncover his humanity while he was too frightened to reveal the deepest corners of his battered heart and soul.
I resist the urge to analyze this film(or most) more deeply - I see movies for their impact on my heart and soul rather than play movie critic, and this one affected me deeply.
I am looking forward to the sequel.
It's style reminded me of Twilight, a movie I also enjoyed, yet I know has been panned as teenage rubbish. I don't really care. I enjoy Twilight and its sequels as well, again for the intensity and chemistry between a man and a woman irrespective of how it was expressed.
If you want to be a feminist and or a movie critic, go for it. I don't really care. I enjoyed this film.
Pacific Rim (2013)
Immersive, if ...
If you are a film critic, or a wannabe one, then, it's a Swiss cheese in the critic's arsenal: plot, characterizations, blah blah blah (Sorry Drac).
I am 60. I love special effects and larger than life action, together with suitably loud and relevant sound.
I saw Pacific Rim for no other reason, and I loved it for that reason: Action, amazing (for me) CGI, great sound and excellent momentum. I was totally immersed in an eruption of sensory explosions. Simple, exciting, immersive.
I forgot myself, who I was, my mortgage, my parking ticket. Great flick! Good medicine for me.
I can now go and watch anyone of the top 250 IMDb and apply an entirely different set of criteria and expectations and I know I will similarly NOT be disappointed
