Hugo (2011)
Overrated
I haven't read the book so I don't know how well it is based on the book, but I can comment on other things.
Overall, I think with an 8.5/10 it is quite overrated - I agree with the ones who wrote it before. I mean before seeing the movie, looking at IMDb and the trailer, I was expecting a very thrilling fantastic story with wonderful 3D effects. I was very pumped up before seeing the movie, but now I am a little bit disappointed.
The 3D effects were good, I am not knowledgeable enough to say that it is the best 3D so far but they were good, although sometimes my eyes were weary of them and I felt the need to take off my glasses and look at the screen with bare eyes. It might be because I was sitting at the front, pretty close to the screen, but still I found myself asking if the 3D is really necessary for this film. I mean it is a matter of choice, but I think it would do without the 3D as well.
The storyline did not contain many action scenes and failed to be very interesting for me at times. Seeing the trailer, I was expecting more of an action film, but it did not turn out to be. To be honest, one of my friends even fell asleep during the film. I was not bored as much as she was, but there were times where i thought the film was much too slow-paced. I think I wanted to see more action - and more magic, learning that George Melies was an illusionist.
I really liked the acting tho. Especially Hugo, Asa, was pretty successful as well as Isabelle -they were both pretty good at acting. Ben Kingsley - no words for him.
In addition, I really liked the juxtaposition of comical and dramatic elements of the movie, for example, especially the contrast between Sacha Baron Cohen's funniness and Asa's despair, in the scene while he was trying to run away from him - a scene towards the end of the film.
In conclusion, I think the film is a little bit overrated. Scoresese did a good job with the 3D, but the story was boring at times. A little bit more action would not hurt the film, and would actually make the 3D much more successful and useful for the film.
Seeking Justice (2011)
Quite good
To be honest, I was particularly happy with the movie. This might be partially due to the fact that the last one I watched was Musallat 2 - a wanna be scary Turkish movie.
The plot was well-written, although with some gaps in certain places that makes the viewer think if it is because of time constraints, and I really liked the message and the place- New Orleans - chosen for the movie. I also liked how, at the end, it went back to the beginning - and the reverse, thus creating questions in our minds at the beginning.
Sometimes it seemed to me hard to believe how serene Nicolas Cage's character could be- under certain circumstances - it seemed that some emotions were lacking, but it might be a choice of acting of course. I really liked Laura's perseverance, her willingness to move on and her trust in her husband. They did a really good psychological job on the character.
Overall, it was a good one. I really liked what I saw. Actions were in place, and were used well to create suspense.
Inception (2010)
Wonderful.
I am grateful for whoever came up with the idea of such a story. It's a wonderful story, very intriguing and captive. There aren't many films that I watch without losing concentration, but this film kept me on it for full length. Looking at Turkish cinema, I am again grateful for the difference of the topic, because recently all we have been seeing is either pregnant women abandoned by their fiancés or women being beaten up. We are fed up with these topics! Not a day passes that someone comes up with the same or similar story. We need different, and fresher topics in the movies. The topic, inception, is very interesting, I spent days researching about it after i watched the movie. I was really affected by it, and since the topic is interesting, the story is as well. It's just wonderful. There is nothing to be said about acting - I found it very successful.
The Ides of March (2011)
unfinished
The acting is great, as one would expect from Clooney and Gosling. I don't think I have much to say about acting.
However the story is a little bit dull. I was looking for more action. I mean it did start as if it was going to be a capturing tale, but somehow after Stephen learned the truth about the intern, the story became really dull and slow-paced. I felt like the resolution was too fast, the story dissolved very quickly at the end. I was also expecting more from the climax - there was something missing there. Ultimately, I am not satisfied. I have not read the original play, so I don't know how the adaptation is but I can't help saying that the story feels unfinished. I had very high expectations before seeing the movie for some reason, so I was quite disappointed.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
what is expected
I watched it yesterday. Now there is this, I don't want to call it boring, but rather lacking in action. Especially in the first half, they dealt with wedding and honeymoon scenes. Therefore, as a result, people who want action are bored of these scenes, including myself as well. However, at least they were loyal to the book and the wedding and honeymoon scenes were handled in a detailed way. I think this is something positive for the people who think that movies should be loyal to their books - but then again of course not every detail could be screened.
There was more action in the second half, especially with the birth scene. It was actually one of the few scenes that i was awaiting in the film. In addition, I think they were really successful at making Bella look much slimmer, because while watching the movie I did not understand that it was a computer effect. The computer effects were in general successful, especially in the wolf scenes, just like the other films of the series.
And there is also another point that from such a book, such a move would be expected. I did not have high expectations considering it was the "first part", so I was not disappointed. Was it a really good movie? No, but I think it was successful considering the book. I think what should be focused on is how the book is translated onto the film, since the topic of the book is what was handled in the movie.
