I had no idea that nearly a month after I watched this movie, I would still be haunted by it. Impressive story, amazing acting, sound and beautiful cinematography.
The movie opens with Francine's (Dunst) vision or dream of the end of the world. Francine has the ability to see the future ("I know these things"). This fact is exemplified by a successful career in advertising, and guessing the exact number of beads in the jar. She went through with her wedding, but refused to create an attachment to her husband. Instead, on her wedding reception she quits her job, has sex with a stranger, and sends her husband home, preferring to spend the honeymoon with her parents. And that is just it: Francine is fearful of the impending doom of Earth, but makes peace with her fate, giving herself to Melancholia in the nude scene.
I loved this movie, even though I still think about it and catch myself watching the sky once in a while.
