An empty concept brilliantly exploited
2 January 2009
It is particularly interesting to see how Hanks can make a nice movie out of nothing. The concept of someone arriving to New York and having to stay at the airport, is not likely to produce any funny situations, but surprisingly in this movie it does. I can't figure out if it is because of the amazing qualities of Hanks, or the creation of sufficiently interesting encounters. In the end, I think, there are just a few actors and actresses out there who can be placed in any situation, setting or plot and succeed in making a great movie out of it. Hanks definitely is one of those. The role played by Zeta-Jones on the other hand doesn't remains pretty empty and little appealing. She doesn't succeed in adequately supporting Hank's part. After all a nice and entertaining movie, but not worth an Oscar either.

Pretty Good
16 May 2008
Isn't it interesting to see how the Japanese succeed in creating an atmosphere of suspense without using an awful lot of violence? To me it seems, at times, that only the setting in the country of Japan causes the mystic ambiance to arise. OK, we've got to admit that we've seen all of this before, in the Ring. Same kind of ambiance, same kind of fear. But still, the skills of the actors and the creative way in which pictures are used to develop the story, makes it well worthwhile. This is not gonna be the best movie you've ever seen, but it's certainly going to give you an interesting viewing experience, and it'll keep you thinking for a little while after.

Dumb and "dumberer" indeed
9 October 2004
This movie can be best described by the words "extremely disappointing". After the hilarious "dumb and dumber" featuring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, this can only be described as disastrous!

Olsen and Richardson do not fit the characters they play and bring no new characteristics into them. They are only trying to imitate Carrey and Daniels, in which they do not succeed.

Where "dumb and dumber" was inventive and hilarious at some points, this was none of the above. The jokes, if there were any, were boring and foreseeable.

Carrey and Daniels managed to combine stupidness and humour into the characters, Olsen and Richardson only the stupidness. They just acted like a bunch of total idiots, and that's it.

A pity!

Best dutch movie ever made
21 December 2003
Paul Verhoeven in this movie managed to do what others before him have failed to do for years, that is combining a great plot-outline and a magnificent sexual tension. Although the movie contains some pretty non-revealing sex scenes, the directors have managed to put the excitement and the danger in front.

This is actually I believe one of the only movies ever made by a Dutch director, that can stand the competition of the great foreign movies.

A great performance especially by Sharon Stone, she is one beautiful woman, but in this film she deserves all the credits for her acting. Michael Douglas is good as always.
