After Life (2019)
Very deep and poignant outlook on bereavement
This series affected me deeply, especially the opening scenes. Not a big fan of Ricky Gervais but this is so well written and executed its unbelievable.
Yes Tony is me ! The drink, language, crass approach towards others and the can't give a s*** about anything attitude. Ignoring others happiness and positive outlook in life.
Alas, thankfully, my wife is a survivor, after a couple of years of sheer hell (breast cancer, yet still ongoing bone cancer). But during that time I can relate to every action and statement that Tony enacts. How Ricky Gervais has captured these emotions is way beyond me and actually changed my opinion of him as a writer / actor.
Tims statement, in the clothes shop, and the conversation over the blind date re suicide are two main issues that entered my head constantly for two years of the "unknowing of a future by myself". His blind date saying her husband "was useless at everything but, give him his due, he really knew what he was doing when it came to suicide" Classic.
The only difference between us is that I have always put others first and bent over backwards for others. When a crisis happens, you do start to look around for the time when its your turn for others to come running to help you. I had absolutely no emotional help from friends or family, if anything they disappeared. YET, with Tim, everyone in his circle are there for him, offering him support but his anger makes him reject all lifelines to help get him over this hurdle.
Setting his job as a reporter is ideal, as it forces him to interact with a large array of characters whom he thinks are total losers in life. Yet they have their own happiness in their lives which he cannot comprehend.
The two cameo appearances of the sex worker (lol) and postie were a welcome lighthearted appearance. (8 out of 10 cats sprang to mind!)
All in all its an amazing series especially for anybody going through bereavement or facing a stressful time. It does make you look at yourself and others.
Brilliant 10/10 for me.
The Cuckoo Patrol (1967)
Rubbish
I watch all genre of films, even if I see bad reviews. I like to make my own mind up. But this film is nothing but an absolute disaster and I find it very embarrassing to say I'm British. Never been a big Kenneth Connor fan and this has done him no favours at all. His acting, if you can call it that, is abysmal and cringe worthy. There are a few well known faces which must have felt very embarrassed to have their name associated with this drivel. Freddie and the Dreamers where more like a nightmare. This so far is the worst film I have ever seen and likely to be the only one as it will certainly take some beating. Avoid please....I have warned you!!
Essex Boys: Law of Survival (2015)
Awful
To start off I am a big fan of all films old, new, bad and good....But this is just beyond belief. It is so bad I do not know where to start!!??. The acting is horrendous , camera work shocking and directing .. abysmal. I think, reading between the "lines" (lol) it was trying to be a Lock Stock Style film....but what a failure. The accents where a joke. Watch out for the amateur acting as if they are waiting for each others line and not sure whos next....poor director?
The fight scenes are farcical...note the police one at the start in the yard. I have always looked at the rating scores here for films but now I seriously have grave doubts. Every review was about 1 or 2.....one critic put it at 5 stars!...yeh right! How the hell did it get its rating of 5.5+. Lot of false reviews here me thinks. AVOID please.
2010: Moby Dick (2010)
Could you make a worse film?
You know that feeling that if you saw a big red button in a nuclear facility that said "Danger do not press" you feel that in built human compulsion to press? Well I read the reviews here and thought what the hell. My god why didn't I listen??! This is without doubt the worst film I have ever seen for a long time. When it came to the point of the sub coming along side of the small boat I seriously thought this was a spoof film, I was waiting for Leslie Nielson to pop up with the "blow up navigator" {Airplane?} The nuclear sub pulls up alongside a small speed boat and the xo in the conning tower is only about two foot higher than the people in the boat!!! The crew where straight out of Police Academy ,note navigator with bandanna! Navy personnel in jungle pattern uniforms. Helicopter with no glass, flown by a pilot with muscular tourettes. Firing bullets at the sub underwater and the result of a major depth charge attack.
It just got too much when the pilot flew the helicopter into the whales mouth....I nearly choked to death on my beer with laughter.
I actually fell asleep half way through, but determined to see it through, like a bad trip to the dentist, finished watching on plus one.
Must admit I did feel a sense of achievement like finishing a marathon!.
It would have been great re-cut as a spoof film, think Down Periscope. Worth a look at if you if you want to see how not to make a film, but otherwise steer well well clear.
One star because it did give me a chuckle
Dark Storm (2006)
absolute rubbish
I am an avid fan of all sci-fi including the old 50's stuff but this was so, so bad it was embarrassing. I was only trying to kill a bit of time before the wife picked me up but nearly ended up killing myself. I must admit I do watch even the worst films to the end, but started daydreaming about how I was going to fix that loose piece of wallpaper behind the TV and missed the end. Poor acting/story to say the least and Baldwins was the worst I have ever seen....poor dialogue...vacant {I was going to say thoughtful!} stares into nowhere. The best line that had me in tears was to the captain "They sent in an assault team sir". I only saw two men attack the fully guarded base! {Think A team} Fairplay Baldwins professor colleague helped pull his acting performance up...shame because he has done a couple of good films. 3 out of 10 due to the not so bad special effects for a TV movie. If your going to watch it, think of your worst enemy then go and make friends with him....you will get a lot more satisfaction!
