Mine (2016)
Very Solid Movie
I won't lie, the start of the movie was pretty dull and slow and a little over the top with the military theme. But once it gets to the actual conflict of the movie; two thumbs up!
I really liked the physiological aspect and what the main character is wrestling with in his own mind. Very human and that was the best part of the movie.
Armie Hammer is a talented actor with his brooding persona. It was a little much at first but he pulled it together incredibly well for the rest of the movie.
Glad I found it. Go check it out!
Iron Fist (2017)
Not Netflix or Marvel's Best Effort
I'll preface my review by stating that I'm not a comic book reader so I don't know much of the source material. I do love what has been done with the MCU though. I'm highly addicted to the movies and shows purely for entertainment value and not necessarily the story depth.
Unfortunately, I'm let down by the Iron Fist. Especially with the incredible tellings of Daredevil and Jessica Jones (Not the biggest fan of Luke Cage either). I really felt the scenes were all over the place and there was barely any backstory to give context for anyone not familiar with the story. Another sad part were the fight scenes. They were nothing in comparison to that of Daredevil. Some of it just felt campy and only slightly better than old kung-fu movies.
I still binged it just so I could get the full scope of what Marvel and Netflix are doing to lead up to the Defenders as well as other Marvel shows.
It's just not what I thought it was going to be. I hope they improve from here. Just keep going with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Punisher. That'll be perfect!
Moonlight (2016)
Why all the hype?
So I read nothing about this movie beforehand which I like to do so I can be really moved by the works of the director and actors. I'd like to start off by saying that it was a unique coming-of-age story line that was thought provoking and uncommon in mainstream movies.
I won't get into any moral issues and whether I agree or disagree with the main story line and main character's orientation. So don't crucify me for that. I like to keep an open mind with the movies I view and I enjoy and well done story and acting performance way before I criticize morals and politics in movies.
But regardless of those things, I still didn't feel it was a very well done plot. I get how they tried to tell the story but and the first and second acts with a lot of struggle. But the third act left a whole lot hanging. So my question is, why all the hype? Mahershala Ali is a stellar actor and is Oscar worthy for his role but I didn't feel he had nearly enough screen time to merit his Oscar win. His role was important for the plot but why get rid of him after the first act? I honestly lost interest after that.
Overall, this movie was way too overrated for Oscar season and I do feel that it was a political and even racial move to do so. Good movie and heart, poor execution in the final product.
Sing Street (2016)
Best of 2016 for Sure!
I had an absolute blast watching this movie. It seems that the 80s are making a comeback with force. You have the super nostalgia that is Stranger Things and the great call backs we had with Rogue One. But this brings back the timeless sounds of the 80s. The songs and bands that inspired the originals of the movie are amazing classics. I could not get enough of the original songs throughout the movie. I immediately went and purchased almost all of them from iTunes. And I still can't get them out of my head. Way too fun and catchy.
I really loved how the story progressed and the characters kind of molded to what they believed was "cool". But they each made a look and fit for themselves and it all worked. The music, the outfits, the hair; perfect! I never even grew up in the 80s and I love the great time piece that Sing Street is. But not only that, it was a very well put together coming-of-age story line. Conor had to find a place to fit in and grow up to love the world around him even through his family circumstances. This will be one of my favorites for a very very long time.
Go buy the songs NOW!!!
Swiss Army Man (2016)
Wonderful Work of Art
This is my very first movie review which has to say something great about the film.
This has to be one of the best Indie films I've ever watched. The directors said that this is nothing like you've ever seen and I can sure agree with that. It was filled with real humor that isn't anything like the cookie cutter comedies you see today. But along with it, very deep messages on how people may see different behaviors and opinions as odd or inappropriate. My thoughts were provoked and my face in an almost constant smile throughout. I walked away from the movie feeling better and knowing my time was not wasted.
I highly recommend this film to everyone I talk to about cinema. I'm sure it's difficult to make original films these days because there's nothing new under the sun, but this gets pretty close. There are nods to Cast Away for sure but it takes a whole different spin being stranded and a typical buddy-comedy.
Thank you to both Daniels for a great time watching your art.
