Here Today (2021)
What a Great Movie!
I felt like we really won the jackpot discovering this movie that I don't think I'd even heard of before. I'm confused by the low rating so I'm giving it a boost to make up for it.
These kinds of movies just aren't made anymore - and we are indebted to the great talent of Billy Crystal for writing and presenting it just as he did.
The characters and the story have dimension and are full of a sense of adventure as we get to know the main character, Charlie, with the backdrop of NYC and this funny man's not so funny backstory and his upcoming journey into the sunset.
Tiffany Haddish was a brilliant costar, though everyone shined next to Billy. He made sure Of it.
Here Today is tender, it's real, it's funny and you won't regret watching it!!
We Were Children (2012)
Every school & church should show this
As an Oji-Cree Métis mother, daughter & granddaughter, and a survivor of intergenerational trauma, I hope that everyone will attempt to watch this program.
It is about the tragic legacy of residential schools, told by two survivors who endured unthinkable horror from the time they were so young.
If You can imagine the families left behind, imagine the fate of thousands of missing children who never returned home, and the survivors of these prisons passed off as schools, then please share with another.
All Peoples from this country called Canada must be a part of understanding the truth so hat healing becomes possible.
RiverBlue (2017)
Slow Paced & Repetitive
The film covers such an Important issue, but not at all engaging or even interesting because it keeps repeating the same information over a d over. Disappointing- if I could have turned this off I would have, but because it was shown at a social justice event I was a part of, I had to sit through it. If I couldn't sit through it, not sure about reach and impact.
This film should be edited down to half its length for a more powerful message.
Modern Love: A Second Embrace, with Hearts and Eyes Open (2021)
I sobbed
This was a beautiful episode, the character development over a 33 minute story arc was stellar.
But how?
A good writer uses everything - no dialogue is wasted - only that which adds to the story is used.
What if we did that in life as well?
New Girl (2011)
Lightweight comedy - racist & misogynistic
I tried to like this. The storyline and the actors try way too hard to make this a farcical, ironic comedy.
Amidst the irrational overreactions and breakups There's ongoing exploitation I've every single stereotype. The one black character, Winston, is featured in one episode by his Jewish roommate, Schmidt, to have been misunderstood and left out of his rightful place in the world as a black man. So in his devoted bro-like show of love and support he takes him to the inner city to get him crack cocaine.
Main character Jess (Zooey))feigns far too much stupidity to pull off strong modern woman the show wants her to be. In one bit her quirky character is running across a toilet paper finish line she set up while alone in her apartment and she says in an overly affected accent 'I do it for Kenya".
Ugh - do better.
