The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
What a Perfect Gem!
At 35 years old, I grew up during the animated Disney renaissance and I have to say this is one of the best animated movies I've ever seen! I can't even count how many times I bursted into laughter out loud. I feel like most modern animated films stunt cast with names who don't match their characters - not this film. Brilliant casting! Last but not least, a unique and fresh animation style. Everything looked detailed yet still "loose" in a painterly style. What an achievement this charming, hilarious film is!
Echo in the Canyon (2018)
False Advertisement
This movie is just one big vanity project for Jakob Dylan. There could be a mini documentary series on the Laurel Canyon scene and it's greater influence on music as a whole, instead you get an eighty minute documentary that is more than 50% Jakob Dylan recording cover songs of the bands mentioned in the doc and him performing said covers at a live show.
I'm tellin you... you get so sick of seeing Dylan in every frame. He is in frame during the interviews. And he consistently offers random meandering thoughts on the Laurel Canyon scene. There is no cohesion to be found whatsoever. It's a shame bc Dylan had the access but there's no focus to be found.
My only hope is that there will be a REAL documentary on the subject someday. Don't support this vanity project.
Tuca & Bertie (2019)
Huge Fan but Huge Disappointment
As someone who thinks Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong are two of the funniest humans walking the planet, dissapointed doesn't begin to describe how I feel after watching three episodes.
I dig weird, quirky stuff but only when it's funny. I never laughed once. Never would've thought that was possible considering the talent involved.
King of Beasts (2018)
This is NOT a Pro-Hunting Doc
So far half of the reviews are bashing this doc for glorifying the hunter. The doc is presented fly-on-the-wall style and it's fantastic b/c the hunter makes himself look like a dumb, jackass all on his own.
It's a shame many people are missing the point. This documentary is actually endorsed by the Humane Society.
I found the documentary interesting as it followed a man who unabashedly slaughters animals b/c "man is the ultimate predator" and claims we all have such an "instinct." But it is admittedly slow b/c the "hunt" in and of itself is slow.
When you watch it, you will see just how ridiculous it is that he takes such pride in his killings when all he does is pull a trigger.
The Wood (1999)
One of My Favorite Films of All Time: Pure, Real, Incredible Comedy
I wish more people have seen this movie. Black, white, whatever your race is, you can relate to this film (if you're a man that is). The importance of breath mints, the fear of asking a girl for a dance (and fear of erection during), the excitement of being seniors, the concern of losing your virginity, the pressure of being cool even with your own friends, the magic of getting a girl's number, the panic during close calls with the police, the nerves on the first day at a new school, unexpected friendships, dancing like no one is watching, the wrath of a bully, the camaraderie that can only come after being friends for years...
This movie has it all. The three young actors are all stars. They make me feel like a kid again watching them. The comic timing of the young Slim is especially impressive. Treat yourself to nostalgia and laughter with this film. It will take you back.
