White House Plumbers: The Beverly Hills Burglary (2023)
Comedy of Errors
On the scale of Watergate adaptations this is closer to 1999's Dick (94 min) than All the Presidents Men, as it definitely leans on comedy. While based broadly on real events (and including a lot of accurate details that aren't important to the story but add to the strangeness of the story, like burglar Howard Hunt having written several lowbrow spy thrillers) it's very cartoony. Theroux and Harrelson have a Felix & Oscar dynamic and now I want to see AI show me Tony Randall as G. Gordon Liddy.
It's too bad Lena Heady and Judy Greer aren't given a lot to do. It's the same problem that the recent Watergate series Gaslit had-there weren't really too many women who were key players in the true story so in adaptations their storylines tend to be incidental to the main plot.
The Offer: A Seat at the Table (2022)
Paramount produces series about how great Paramount is
A mixed bag. Matthew Goode is great as Evans but I wish it focused more on the creative side over contracts and deals. I suppose it's because it's based on the memoirs of producer Al Ruddy which is too bad because the energy flags every time the story focuses on him (Coppola, Puzo and above all Evans are such big characters that Ruddy is dull in comparison).
