Love Is Blind (2020)
The holy sacrament of matrimony pulled into the gutter
I watched Season 3 from beginning to end. I liked it for a while, but when Zanab, standing at the altar in her bridal dress, ranted on and on about how much Cole had hurt her embarrassing not only Cole but especially herself, I got really disgusted. I then realized what the show was all about: pulling the holy sacrament of matrimony into the gutter for the sake of better ratings, and to boot, getting Christians to do it. I also realized that the only sane people in the whole show were invisible: Cole's parents, who wanted absolutely nothing to do with the whole thing. This show follows a very familiar pattern: tearing everything apart that had held our society together in the past for the sake of better entertainment and higher ratings. The collateral damage, not the least of which is fewer and fewer children being raised by their physical parents, is shamelessly accepted as an externalized cost.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
The best Christian movie I have ever seen
It has everything in it: pacifism in the midst of violence, forgiveness in the midst of mockery and contempt and an unshakable belief in God and the Bible.
Die Päpstin (2009)
Too simplified to be believable
The story does not appear to have good characterization. People were either 100 Percent good or 100 Percent bad. Real people with extreme rare exception have both good and bad traits. The simple characterizations made the movie too kid like. Also, the events were not really believable. The probability that the girl who the heroine helped when living in squalor, just so happened to be the woman to accidentally find the heroine before she almost died and who later happened to become the bishop of Paris who wrote the book to tell the story is just extremely low. Also the love story that the man who helped the heroine when she was a little girl in Germany later happened to come to Rome at the right time to help her when she was in her greatest danger and to be appointed as the chief of the Swiss Guard is as equally unbelievable.
The movie may have been true to the book as its only redeeming feature. For it to be a compelling and interesting historic movie, it would have had to be a lot more nuanced.
Der Chinese (2011)
Disappointing
The movie slowly but surely develops historic context. The historic context is of vital importance for the whole movie to make sense. Unfortunately, it is a big disappointment. The characterization is so simplified that the historic scenes are simply not believable. The characterization of the historic person is so black and white, it is child like. It is a simple vehicle for the movie makers to express their untempered hate towards Christianity.
If you watch the movie, also look out for the probability of some of the characters to meet again later, or for the probability of the final act of the heroine, simply unbelievable. Not nuanced enough. Too simplistic. Disappointing.
Rose (2006)
Truly Beautiful
This is a truly beautiful movie (I do not want to call short film even though it is only a little over 30 min long, it feels like and I remember it as if it were a full length feature movie). I read the little synopsis on the jacket and then remained on the edge of my seat for the whole time while watching the movie. The suspense continued the whole time because the movie is very condensed. But at the same time it was a sheer pleasure to watch: the colors, in combination with the acting, in combination with the music, ... it all fit together.
I have been thinking about the movie for a long time since.
I recommend it without reservation to anybody, regardless of what kind of films they usually like to watch.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
A deep religious experience
One of the best comments I have heard is: for people who don't have any relationship with Jesus, it is just a blood fest, for people who do have a relationship with him, this movie results in a deep religious experience. He went in front of us to show us the way, and He showed how to forgive people in the most difficult of circumstances. I want to watch this movie a few more times to internalize more of His "personality" and to be able to follow Him more closely. He stayed true to His belief to the bitter end. He knew it would mean a painful death and He didn't try to talk himself out of it, didn't lie because He was so afraid, and walked as tall as He could throughout the whole ordeal, never once regretting His decision to stand up for what He believed in. Just notice how many martyrs were able to follow in His footsteps. Also notice that He became the probably most influential person who ever lived. Time is separated by His life (B.C. and A.D).
