Martyrs (2015)
A shell of the original
The original Martyrs is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I'd even rank it up there with The Exorcist, another film that pushed the envelope and was ahead of its time. Unfortunately, because of the original's cult status, a remake was inevitable. Does it do the original any justice? I can't say that it does. And I honestly feel bad for the directors. They were simply set up for failure. If you are curious about the remake, watch it. I'd read the bad reviews, but I still had to see how it held up to the original. Just too bad it doesn't at all. I will say the acting and score were decent. Again, not as good as the original, but good nonetheless. If you've never seen the original or remake, please watch the original first. Yes, you will have to read subtitles, but I'm gonna assume most of you have a third grade education and can read.
Evil Dead (2013)
Yeah buddy...
Was the first thing that came out of my mouth when I walked out of the theater yesterday. I'm a true horror movie fan. Love the original series. Love extreme movies such as "Martyrs," "A Serbian Film," etc. I can't wait to see what the director brings to the table next. He has a knack for creepy, disturbing visuals, which, in my opinion, trump cheap scare tactics shown in pretty much every horror movie now days. What's awesome is that I hyped myself up for this film, and I wasn't let down! That's rare. Go see this film. The haters obviously either hated the movie before they watched it...or were just too cool to admit they were freaked out. Enjoy!
Martyrs (2008)
Will go down as one of the best horror movies ever
I've been a true horror movie fan for over 30 years. I still remember the day I sat down to watch "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" with my younger brother and felt my legs shake at the sight of Leatherface slamming a metal door. Of course, I was only 10 years old, but it was the first time a movie had left a lasting impression on me.
My favorite movies tend to leave me feeling drained, as if I had just experienced a traumatic event. We all want to "feel" something, whether it's good or bad. For me, it's the later. I want to feel sad. I want to feel disturbed. Is there something wrong with me? Nah.
"Requiem for a Dream" is another film that sat with me for days. "The Elephant Man" is another. These films are not classified as horror, but they effectively display human suffering in a way that few films have. "Martyrs" is of the same tattered cloth.
I'm not going to bore you with a plot summary. There's no need. In fact, the less you know the better. I will say this, though, the story is unique and the message it conveys is deeply profound.
It's true, the graphic violence and subject matter will offend many viewers. But don't we all need a swift kick in the rear every now and then? Seriously folks, if your idea of horror is "Twilight," then avoid this like you would a porta-potty at a biker rally. This one ain't for you. However, if you want to see a landmark film, one that transcends far beyond the rubbish Hollywood produces these days, then this is a must. 10 out of 10.
Horror fans rejoice!
