Loving Leah (2009)
Unexpected. Worth the time.
I have been pleasantly surprised by this movie. The level of acting was verry good, the story was excellent and I liked it very much.
How do you explain a religious tradition? This movie succeeded in bringing non-Jewish viewers in contact with a specific tradition from the Jewish religion.
The characters were portrayed very well by the cast.
Most movies for me are just to pass the time, this, however, made me pay attention. I chose it as a romantic movie, but it was so much more.
I hope there are more of these movies to follow. And I learned to look beyond the cast. That was an eyeopener for me.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Not one to remember
It is awful. Trying to watch hurt my eyes, my ears, my brain, need I go on...?
Black Widow (2021)
Spectacular yes, but not what I expected...
The first half hour was below average. After that it was ok. The timeline was not very clear. The second half of the movie was spectacular.
Last Christmas (2019)
Who knew....?
George Michael as a writer. But it is actually pretty good. Unexpected I must say, but totally enjoyable. Using one of the best Christmas songs in this way.
What Men Want (2019)
It's absolutely not Hidden Figures
Opposite to her part in Hidden Figures this is not Henson's finest hour. With the same plot as What Women Want they could not have done it more wrong. There is not even ONE believable character and everyone is overacting in the worst possible way. I struggled through the movie to about half way, hoping that it would pick up, but alas.... and so I gave up.
I've seen worse, but not much worse.
It is said that an actor is as good as his last performance so I hope this is not a carreerkiller for the cast and director.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: She (2019)
This is NCIS history and then some
Without a doubt the best episode so far. Great story and a great cliffhanger. I sure hope it will be going in this direction.
And I hope Gina Monreal can be inspired to write more of this.
Justice League (2017)
A $300,000,000 movie with serious flaws.
For an estimated $300,000,000 movie I expect a certain level of quality. As I was watching the movie I thought Cavill was replaced in some shots by a stand-in, and a bad one at that, but, as I found out later, it was a very bad cgi job. Just to remove Cavill's upper lip facial hair.
About the movie I can be short: The attempt at humor was not very successful en acting was just above average. The action scenes were good and I liked the story, but as a whole a bit disappointing.
Superheroes are superheroes, not comedians.
If this is the direction these movies are headed, I see a rather bleak future.
The Emoji Movie (2017)
Hollywood on a path to hell?
This is a very disturbing development. It is time to question the mental faculties of today's producers, directors and even actors that are willing to participate in this 'what-ya-ma-call-it'. Horrible, writers coming up with these screenplays. These ideas. These insults to the human intelligence. All I can say is steer clear of this monstrosity and protect your kids from ever having to see this. It will cause a huge traumatic experience and will leave them scarred for life. And, to make things even worse, it could cause mutations. Kids could be born with a phone attached to their arm instead of a hand.
Mr. Church (2016)
Eddy Murphy: Back from oblivion.
My expectations for this movie were not very high, to say the least. Eddy Murphy had let me down to much, over the last few years. But after I read the plot summary I decided to give it a try. And what a surprise.
With a good story and excellent performances from the lead actors, this is a movie you will want to see. In this movie about an unlikely friendship between an adult (African-American) man and a young (white) girl, Eddy Murphy shows his talents once again. After a huge dry-spell this could be his breakthrough as a serious actor. And not only his performance is great, also Britt Robertson is shining. It may be a sob-story, but it sure is among the best of the last decade.
And when you do decide to watch it, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
The Assassination of Star Wars
My expectations were high in anticipation of the new Star Wars episode. The raving reviews and huge success at the box office made me believe this was the best ever Star Wars movie.
But how times have changed.
My guess is, J.J. Abrams will not be invited to direct a new movie anytime soon. He succeeded in hugely disappointing many fans with this dismal performance. With the flimsy story, the two-dimensional characters, the same desert planet and ice planet, the huge "gun", it's a bad remake of Episode IV: A New Hope, but then with everything much larger. The only positive aspect is the imagery.
In my opinion this team has effectively killed the Star Wars saga. And when reading between the lines in the George Lucas interview about this episode, although he retracted it later: Disappointment!!
I sincerely regret my decision to watch it in the cinema and not to wait for DVD or blue ray or free download. In fact, I think I would have been better off not having seen it at all.
Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade (2013)
Disney commercial?
To call this Disney's Christmas Day Parade is an insult to all parades. They are in business to make money, but this is one big commercial laced with for the most part rather poor performances by renowned artists.
As good as the latest animated feature films are, this should go into history as one of the worst shows I have ever seen. I've come to expect a whole lot better over the years from Disney than this horrible waste of my time.
I sure hope the old Walt Disney magic will return to entertain the fans.
No Strings Attached (2011)
Can it get any worse?
No really, i've seen overcooked vegetables do a better job.
It's flat, not funny, but most of all disappointing. The plot in IMDb was not convincing, but the cast looked promising so I thought, let's watch. Although each of the lead actors have already proved they can act, this was an awful performance by all of them. No sparkling, no chemistry, nothing. I tried to watch, but after some twenty minutes of hoping, I gave up and zapped through the rest in a few minutes and that was even to much.
And about the 6.1, the only excuse I can think of is that a lot of people with absolutely no idea how a romcom should be made, have rated this movie. If only I could rate it negative.
Ender's Game (2013)
Eye candy, but something's missing
Having never read the book, it's hard to compare the two. But still I got the feeling something was missing.
All through the first three quarters of the movie, I found myself wondering what happened from scene to scene. It all seemed so disconnected, so like the jagged edge of a saw and although the special effects were spectacular at times, it could not capture my full attention.
After reading some of the reviews, I understood why. There was indeed something missing. Only those parts of the book that could be converted to movie were used, the rest was skipped or deleted, and that was exactly what I experienced watching the movie.
That doesn't mean, however, that this was a bad movie. On the contrary, a great performance of Asa Butterfield and the last quarter of the movie made more than up for it. On the whole it was barely satisfactory, so 5.5 out of 10.
Closed Circuit (2013)
Good, interesting, but lacking....
It is a good movie with an interesting look into the secret world of spying and a clever use of the London terrorist attack.
The main characters are convincing, there are nice plot twists and turns, the suspense builds up predictably but lets you down a little in the last quarter of the movie. At some points I felt something missing, like scenes were deleted or cut leaving holes in the plot.
Looking at this picture with today's knowledge, I would say the story could have had more detail. I think it is a missed opportunity, especially considering Snowden's revelations. The movie was released at the end of August 2013 and by than Snowden had published a lot of information. Sure, not everything can or should be published or portrayed in a movie, but still.... it is entertainment and as far as I know fictional based on true events.
I think definitely worth watching, enjoy
Deja Vu (2006)
Thriller extraordinaire
One of the best movies with Denzel Washington, in my opinion. A terrorist blows up a ferry with a lot of sailors and family on liberty. After reporting about several leads an ATF agent is invited to join a special investigation team. It soon becomes clear that this is about time travel. The story is set in the aftermath of Katrina, which is clearly visible throughout the movie. In fact in the credits the makers have dedicated this movie to the rescuers, helpers and victims of Katrina. Although the story is physically impossible, it is totally believable. Mostly because of the good acting and depth of the characters. Normally I have four or five breaks for coffee or a smoke or I skip parts of the movie, but this one had me glued to the screen. It will most certainly be on my personal top 10. So enjoy.
P.S. How about the terrorist's motives? In the end he says: It was not supposed to happen like this. Like what?
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
This is a pretty good "How to...."
In this movie men can recognize the, sometimes horrible, female logic and women see men stumbling through a relationship trying to understand and please their woman. The lead characters have the necessary chemistry, the story is good and so is the acting. Although somewhat predictable, a lot of situations made me really laugh, particularly where Andie leaves and Ben goes after her, suggesting the couples therapy. I enjoyed the movie, surprisingly. It definitely deserves to be called a romantic comedy. And a must see for people who want a funny little insight into a man/woman relationship. I sure want to recommend it.
The Lego Movie (2014)
Lego movie, yeah right
I haven't seen it and I will probably never see it, given my immense dislike for these "things" sprung from the darkest regions of someones mind.
Not every comic or toy is suited to make a movie about. I cannot, for the love of god, imagine Lego building blocks being interesting enough for that. Don't get me wrong, it is a great toy for stimulating children's' fantasy and enjoyed by many, but a movie, come on.
The fact that so many people rated so high is disturbing and tells us a lot about the expectations of the public and if they are so easily satisfied I truly wonder what awful monsters will be created in the name of the almighty dollar.
I sure hope that some of the old "tinseltown" magic will return and let the studios and production-companies come to their senses. Among todays movies are real gems, real must see movies, but there are far to few to my standards.
The Christmas Card (2006)
Emotional, in spite of the lead actors
Although a bit flimsy, the plot is not to bad. A Christmas card from an unknown woman as the trigger for the lead character to find love, well I haven't seen that before.
Throughout the movie the story offers enough emotional moments and where Asner and Nettleton are rather convincing, Newton and Evans seem to just have had a Botox treatment. Almost the whole time without any emotions except for the final seconds at the Vietnam memorial. That looked genuine. Probably because their faces weren't visible.
Still, I think the movie is worth your time. I enjoyed it, despite the poor acting.
Epic (2013)
Does Epic deliver?
Epic is a family feature animation film with a twist. Instead of looking to the "bigger" picture it turns us to a smaller world. It is about the battle between good and bad, between preserving and destroying nature.
In short, the "good guys" need to have the pod of a lily bloom in the light of the full moon at the solstice or nature will die. And of course it will bloom at the last possible moment. So in the end everybody lives happily ever after. But before that happens a human girl is shrunk to the size of the tiny people and has a great adventure, falling in love with the tiny people along the way. She is, in fact, the non-believing daughter of a professor trying his whole career to prove the tiny people exist, resulting in his wife and daughter leaving. After the passing of her mother she goes back to her father, but he is still obsessed with his work. When she wants to leave again the story starts.
The story is nice, but fairly predictable with the obligatory fight between good and bad. The characters are good, magical at times, and there are enough emotional moments to make this a feel good movie, but that is it. For the little ones it is exciting and adventurous. The animation is wonderful almost lifelike, so credit where credit is due. It certainly is worth your attention and time.
Christmas Angel (2009)
Acceptable Christmas Tale
The story is rather nice and the movie could have scored higher, if it weren't for the male lead character. Davison was pretty good and Hawker did an OK job, but Clyde would better have been replaced by the dog as the male lead. It's performance was, at least, above average. Can one speak of a one dimensional character? Well, it's not even that. Both the actor and the character were virtually non-existent, noise at best. For that reason alone this movie hardly qualifies as a romance. Nice, but don't stay home for it. After this dismal performance I will probably never again take the risk to watch a movie with Clyde in it. And like Forrest Gump said: "That is all I have to say about that"
