Amazing Story

I am reviewing this film based on how I felt the subject was so amazing. This review has nothing to do with editing, cinematography, etc. Having said that:

I really found this documentary informative and moving. The personal stories the surgeons and nurses told brought me to tears. I was definitely moved by how thankful these people were. It was humbling. I also liked the follow-up that was given about two of the patients. It was great to see both of them, but Kim's before and after was astonishing!!

For those of you wondering what this film is about: A group of doctors, plastic surgeons, nurses and other volunteers go to Vietnam to operate on people with cleft lips and palettes. Many people in the United States are also born with clefts, but most are able to get surgery when they are very young. This is not the case in Vietnam. Some people are so ashamed by their clefts that they rarely go in public, or they use something to hide their clefts. One of the reasons they are ashamed of the clefts is due to a superstition. It is said that if a pregnant woman sees someone with a cleft, her child will also have one. The story of the surgeries, workers, and patients are fascinating and moving. I just wished the film were a bit longer, because I would like to know if the doctors got to do any of the surgeries that weren't for the clefts. In the first few minutes of the film, you see people that came to get surgeries on things besides the clefts, and it does make you curious about what happened to them.

Overall, I think this documentary delivers a great story that will make you cry, laugh, and ultimately lift your spirits. If you get a chance, you should definitely see it. It's only about 30 minutes long!!

Little Giants (1994)

I still love to watch it!!

I never expected this movie to contain life-altering dialog or include Oscar-caliber performances, and I think that is why I love it so much. I don't have the hardest life on the planet, but I do work, and go to college full-time, and now I am also starting to apply to grad schools. So sometimes I just want to sit down and watch a film where I don't have to think. I can just sit back, relax, laugh at a few corny jokes, and root for the good girls and guys. So on days when I am tired of all the stress I love to pop in a movie like The Little Giants. It really has a cute plot. A dad wants the best for his daughter, his brother doesn't pick her for his football team even though she is really good, so he starts his own team with a mix of kids that normally wouldn't be picked for any sports team. Even though his team doesn't boast the brawn of his brothers, his little giants have big hearts and a lot of will. With a few little love stories in the mix, and of course an event that seems to spell doom for the little giants, this is a really fun, enjoyable film that is appropriate for the whole family. Yeah it may have its predictable moments, but that is just what I want when I settle in to watch a film in this genre.

I remember watching this show with my dad. He loved it and I think he was much more found of it than I. But I still enjoyed it. I thought it was quirky and I wish I had it on DVD. I think this cartoon was probably one of the last cartoons I actually likes. It seems as if 1994 or 1995 cartoons seemed to go in a new direction. So I definitely miss Marsupilami and wish it would have lasted a little longer. Of course I wish the same thing about Gargoyles. I mean what other cartoon teaches you about Shakespeare without you knowing your learning Shakespeare. If you happen to run across an old rerun of the show you should definitely tune in.

The Letter People (1974–1976)

Come and meet the Letter People....

This was one of my favorite shows. I remember that sometimes it would be a little creepy. I think the creepiest episode involved Mr. G. I would love to have this series on DVD. I cannot believe the number of my friends who do not remember this show. I thought it was great and I loved all of the characters. There are only a few that I still remember. I had no idea this show was from the 70's. I watched it in the early 80's. The great thing about the Letter people is that it could still be shown today and still mean something and teach something and be entertaining. My stomach turns at the sight of some of today's children shows. I think reruns of The Letter People, Todays Special, and Mr. Rogers should never end.

Mulholland Drive (2001)

My all-time favorite film.

One of my favorite things about this film is the freedom I have to theorize what I want about certain items and events in the film and all the symbolism that I see. I know that David Lynch likes to keep his own theories on his films pretty secret and that is great. By doing this every one who views the film sees something completely different and no one will prove their theories wrong. Beyond that I think that the film is one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. I think the acting is superb and the story is my favorite ever written. This is one of the few dramas that I can watch more than once a year. I love all of the elements of it and I seem to spot something new or come up with a new theory every time that I view it.
