Mirzapur (2018)
Truly the 1st Bingeworthy series of India! UP style!
I was apprehensive after reading dismissive reviews by major media houses such as IndianExpress and HT. But for what it's worth- the time it took me to take the plunge and watch the first episode was much more than it took in finishing the 1st season.
To my mind, this show is the perfect amalgamation of all shows its compared with. It has all the gore and wit of Wasseypur, the games, power-tussle and politics of Narcos and twists of Sacred Games. Still it retains a style unique to itself, because its well rooted in culture and depicts somewhat accurate archetypes of lawyers, and goons (read: vocabulary) of Purvanchal. I myself am Varanasi and can vouch for its authenticity.
Above and beyond fulfilling the expectations from this stellar cast , what makes this show atleast an 8'er on IMDb- is due to its tight storytelling/script. Its truly not an episode lengthier, nor much shorter. Making it truly the 1st bingeworthy show to come out of Indian soil.
If you've still not watched this series, I envy you. Because you have a treasure worth of 9 hours awaiting for you.
Ghoul (2018)
Good story, mediocre execution
Kept falling off, took 3 attempts to finish this series.
Acting is subpar, from everyone. I also feel let down by Radhika Apte. A story set in dystopian future, but dialogues are still old school.
Cinematography and the overall grim mood is well portrayed, but consider this as an average product in Netflix India's repertoire. A dozen of average content will eventually produce a masterpiece.
Here's hoping that a true horror/thriller is not too far away.
