Shaitaan (2024)
Acting was good but story and narration itself is terrible.
The trailer was better as a movie than the movie itself. It's like they thought they're a genius for thinking about mind control and just ran with it. 80% of the movie is about how he can control her. And he just keeps on doing and showing that. It's senseless.
As per trailer, yes he can control her mind completely so get on with it and move the story along. But it's literally just that, and 30 Minutes of other stuff.
They didn't really focus on why it was happening or even on saving her. It was literally just 1.5 hours of him controlling her and making her do senseless stuff.
It's like Bollywood has forgotten how to make movies. They failed to establish them has a family, failed to make the audience even care about it and then again failed to establish fear or even anticipation.
After watching it, this can be called a writer's fantasy movie of controlling a teenage girl. Rest was just added as an afterthought to call it a movie.
Laapataa Ladies (2023)
Perfect blend of humour, drama, and life lessons.
Impactful movie, wonderful acting and direction. Dialogues were crisp. They created more chemistry between characters in seconds which some movies fail to make in hours.
Nice story, enjoyable and a must watch movie. Lovely to see that the show was full and it's being appreciated.
Story is simple enough, all characters have great actors who managed to make an impact in small amounts of time. Really appreciated the dialogues, and how well developed the characters were. There's no dramatic change of hearts which is sudden. Just a group of people finding their way based on the situations they're presented with.
Animal (2023)
Can you really even call it a movie?
Technically, there was no cohesive storyline. Dialogues were all over the place. Conversations between characters were weird. Like every time one would say something and other would go into an unrelated monologue. (Mostly ranbir).
It's nothing like the trailer. Story is not about son and father. They didn't show anything about their relationship after the first few scenes.
Coming to content, Ranvijay never knew to answer a question straight. His character had no consistency. Even if you make a negative character, his actions need to be consistent. In one instant they want to show he is unhinged and doesn't care, and then next instant he would forgive and protect them.
A movie needs to have a story, a plot, characters need to make sense inside the movie.
Their attempt at jokes were so distasteful. He gives a wedgie to a servant, rants about his underwear, there's two monologues about pubic hair, there's denial about medicine.
Even the climax was so underwhelming. They just faught in one song.
Worse part was how they used Sikhs in the movie. They tried to use them to do idk what. But they're just around to elevate Ranvijay. And in main climax they're told to stay back. Then killed on screen helplessly. Why would you show something like that.
All in all, as a movie it sucks due to lack of story and badly written characters. Then there's the content.
Gumraah (2023)
Interesting, unpredictable and with balanced flow of information
Not your typical suspense where main thing is hidden till the end. Things kept getting more and more interesting.
Performance of the actors was great. Story was unique. And the way it unfolded was interesting.
There were multiple facets to every plot point, and they didn't stretch anything. So felt like a crisp movie with good execution of storyline.
First half can feel a bit slow, but still wasn't completely wasteful. It's necessary to build up characters and explain why someone would do what they did.
So overall it was a good experience while watching the film. Refreshing, and doesn't give you time to think. You can keep guessing but I don't think anyone could've pinpointed what happened.
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023)
Very weird all in all. Takes progress back atleast 50 years.
Firstly the storyline shown in trailer is absolutely false and misleading. That is not a glimpse at what the movie is about.
Ranbir is just giving rant monologues. The dialogues between the hero and heroine are very robotic and just don't click. They were unable to produce any chemistry in movie.
Story too is very weird. The breakup business angle could've been fun but it was a very weird storyline to introduce without giving it more thought.
They tried to do too much, and everything just seems like a PR move for Ranbir.
As a romcom, the story is typical misogynist stuff. In a gist, they meet for 6 days on vacation and on 7th day he introduces her to family. After that they don't spend time one on one. Then when she mentioned the reason for breakup the movie goes into family values and joint family praise.
Bollywood still doesn't understand the issue with praising and preaching the value of living with family selectively and exclusively for men.
Anyways, it had it's fun moments but seems like 4 movies worth of storylines smashed into one.
In trying to do it all, they managed to do nothing.
His monologues were very unbearable. And that's not how you talk to people in real life.
Basically it felt like they were talking AT each other and not to each other.
Girlfriend's role in the movie was very underdeveloped. There was no focus given on her. And whenever it was, she was just used to show ranbir in good light.
Then I found out it was a luv ranjan film. So my bad. That makes sense.
Cameos were also useless. Basically shut off your brain and forget progress to see a man good woman bad movie.
Bones: The Sense in the Sacrifice (2013)
Pelant's storyline makes complete sense.
Lovely episode. Understated brilliance tbh.
At first I felt the ending didn't make sense. But after remembering the storyline it was very logical.
Pelant was invincible as long as it was just an impersonal game. The moment he got obsessed with bones, and I feel that moment was when bones proposed to booth in the middle of pelant's case.
After that there was a pivot. It wasn't a game anymore and he actually was emotionally invested.
He knew these people only on paper, and that ultimately caused his demise. Writer's did a wonderful job of show don't tell.
During the episode we see pelant bluffing, and in the same episode bones said based on past behaviour that pelant doesn't distract or bluff etc. But he did. Because he wanted something unattainable, namely bones.
At the compound too you can see his conflict. Logically pelant had set up a video feed and would have talked to brennon via video. But he couldn't resist being there physically.
Then he kept applying Booth's professional behaviour history and assumed it would be same even with brennon in danger. And that was a fatal flaw in his plan.
I believe this was a story of his brilliance becoming hindered by emotions and lack of plan.
If you think about it, he was never physically involved before. So basically it was a fight on paper based on people's information on paper.
But he got involved physically twice in this episode. Once at the lab then at the power station. Both times his confidence was based on paper and theories, and not actually knowing any of these people.
So I loved these crumbs and how it makes you think.
At the end, pelant died because he got involved physically based on virtual knowledge of these people.
Pathaan (2023)
Amazing movie. Has all the elements to be entertaining. Worth a watch.
Cinematography, dialogues, story and direction. Everything is great.
Glad to see a well thought out movie after some time. All the characters were well written and complex. Unlike the flat characters that are usually written in hero vs villian.
Saw a lot of elements of Marvel franchise. The cameo, complex villian, humor were all appreciable.
Especially the "villian".
Refreshing to see after the general stencil of villian with a bad plan and hero trying to stop. This time villian had good thought out plans and things were quite unexpected.
So there was the shock factor as well. Mystery, thrill and action.
There were some instances that were typical Bollywood stuff but I found it to be endearing actually. Like if they changed everything we'd miss it.
That's all I can say without spoilers. Overall very entertaining, very nice to watch and experience.
House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths (2021)
Useless. Denial, denial and more denial.
Most important factors were brushed off or mentioned in passing without depth.
How can they say no crime occured? Typical denial of facts, scared to place any responsibility anywhere and no in depth concrete conclusions.
Third class documentary, if it can be called that.
The point of documentaries is to add to what was missing in the past. There is no point in inconclusive documentaries. None of the true crime documentaries in other countries are like that. This one had so much scope. Wasted effort and time.
Three episodes of no new information, no new analysis and no conclusion. Terrible.
Dhokha: Round D Corner (2022)
Was fun while watching it and that's what matter.
Movies are to be experienced. While watching the movie, it was fun. Your experience will depend on who you go with.
Haq gul's character and actor were outstanding. I didn't find the movie to be predictable. The ending was unexpected and overall the ride is what matters and it was thrilling.
Kudos to the makers for not showing unnecessary graphic sex scenes.
Story was new. Actors did an amazing job. And overall a good watch.
I think there were no songs in it too.
I can only review it on the basis of how I felt while watching it. And that experience was nice. It was almost funny tbh. Haq gul's character was mind-blowing. I think him and the wife were the stars in this movie. Brilliantly done.
Chup (2022)
Perfection
5/5 stars (Provided it's not copied)
Where to begin? Can't find any faults in the movie. Could write an essay about how amazing and brilliant it was no matter what detail you want to focus on.
If you're reading this to decide whether to watch it or not, you've already done more than you should. Just give it a watch.
Haven't felt this good after a movie in years. Literally years.
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who worked on the film.
To summarise: Acting, cinematography, background music, music, writing, dialogues, characters, everything was on point.
Every little thing in the movie was with a purpose. Nothing extra, nothing less. There's no could've should've etc about this movie. Worth watching multiple times and I don't think it'll ever become less enjoyable. Can't wait to watch again tbh.
Dobaaraa (2022)
Quite a watch after the recent movies that came out.
Story is nice and to the point. There's no extra scene.
Might seem abrupt at times but overall it was unpredictable and intriguing.
Story might seem complex for an average viewer. So maybe would come off as bad. But if you pay attention and have even little understanding of basic way time travel is shown in movies then it's a good watch.
The past/present shifts could be hard for some people to follow.
Still very well done and acting was great by all the cast members. I would say it's a good one to watch in theatre.
Darlings (2022)
Pyar nahi karti toh maarti kya
Lovely movie. We need more movies like these. 10 stars just for the visuals and badru's mom. Could watch this every day and still wouldn't get boring.
Removed stars because of the ending.
I guess they made a good balance between what can be shown in Indian cinema.
Bullet Train (2022)
Rollercoaster with story, laughs, snake and Fiji
Fun to watch. Things tie up together nicely and no part felt unnecessary. Characters were Quirky, grew on you and were entertaining.
Overall a great light watch after a long time.
Biggest question is how much Fiji water paid for this movie 😂
Anek (2022)
Good story, dialogues and screenplay could've been better but the category of social movies is still new and it will take time to fully develop.
While watching it..it can be unbearable. But makes you think.
The story had a lot of potential. And in a different way, but I think it achieved it.
We see a group of people experiencing the same thing but reacting in different ways. And we see innocent bystanders that go through the experience.
They did fail to deliver the message properly, and conclusion should've been explained more clearly.
I still think people should watch it. Every genre of movies go through a learning phase before everyone learns to nail everything and make it entertaining. Without such attempts, we'll never just directly get a perfect movie.
So just because it's about a social cause and shows different angles to the problem, one should watch it just as a way of supporting and learning.
Runway 34 (2022)
Would've been great if it wasn't dealing with such a critical and technical topic
Some drama is expected. But movie just ended up being illogical. Felt like different people wrote the movie in parts and didn't tell each other what the story is going to be.
Initial plots that were added but not explored:
- Pounds vs kg fiasco while fuelling the plane.
- Pilot looking into the alcohol section and going to the restroom immediately
- Amitabh bachchan's character being hyped up as being detail oriented and not missing anything
Since it's based on a true story, can't help but add that they've made so many unnecessary complications that they just didn't deal with in the plot.
Example: Weather is bad, fuel is less, pilot choosing a different runway with unfavorable wind patterns.
It was a technical investigation with everyone from the industry. Bachchan's character focused on the alcohol aspect, partying, drinking on flight (All anticlimactic)
But they failed to question him on major faulty decisions like why he made multiple attempts at kochi and didn't divert to Bangalore. Not to mention the whole him remembering the runway aspect even though the plane he flew was nowhere close to this size.
Also, even as a layman it's obvious that choosing and knowing a runway is not as important as wind directions. The runway he chose had strong wings in the same direction as the plane, so the plane obviously overshot the runway.
Some things were sooo damn unbearable. The "Jalaya toh nahi" dialogue. The "photographic memory" and the investigator using unnecessarily complex Hindi words and then translating or just translating simple sentences.
Worse aspect was them making the pilot female and just make it such a weak character. No pilot in that position will have that type of personality. They just showed her as weak, crying, and freezing at important parts. (co-pilot in original fligh was male). That's just typical Bollywood misogyny though.
Lost opportunities : The airline's lawyer, the owner, the owner of another airline. All shown to be strong characters without any impact on the plot.
So...overall a wasted opportunity that fails to be anything. Not entertaining. Not informative. And not mysterious.
Bachchhan Paandey (2022)
Good enough
Nice movie to watch with family. It doesn't get boring as such. The twists were okay and kind of unexpected.
Although it's a low standard but I will support and praise such movies purely for the lack of misogyny and sexism. Bollywood is used to using the female lead for shock value or vulnerability to molestation and rape attempts. But even in a remote part of India a gang full of thugs never once threatened the lead with rape/undressing.
After recently revisiting how far bollywood lets molestation scenes go, I appreciate the makers for treating women as women and not making it about rape threats/sexual assault.
Apart from that, idk what this is remake of, it doesn't matter. As a story that we watched for the first time, we had a few laughs and we were surprised by the turn it took. So good enough and does the job in my book.
The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman (2022)
Removing stars because the showed the last witness in a way that would reveal her identity. Even when she expressed she doesn't want her face shown.
Showed her home, her hair colour, and even the side of her face. Very callous.
Apart from that, intriguing story.
Kudos to the dad and ex for being persistent.
Abducted in Plain Sight (2017)
More focus on the man's history and trials was needed.
This documentary makes it seem as if everything is the parents' fault.
And facts like him having already served a one year jail term for raping a kid. And other legal history are just glossed over.
I found those aspects the most infuriating. We can't expect the parents to have thought that someone could be capable of something like this. In retrospect, sure. But when it's a trusted person and when such cases weren't all that highlighted or people told about.
This was the time when all warnings pointed to stranger danger. And nothing else.
How is an average parent expected to think someone is capable of something like that? Especially at that time.
Most disturbing part is that his past guilty verdict had no bearing on his kidnapping case. He was still being left out on bail and given reduced sentences. Even after he pled guilty to kidnapping he spend ten days in jail.
Why are we focusing on the family and not on the systems that kept letting a man like this out and about in society?
How does someone guilty of raping a kid spend just one year in jail?
The Tinder Swindler (2022)
You're not a genius. You have just not been targeted by a sociopath.
It's very easy and quite ignorant to sit and whine about "lacking empathy" for the victims.
What happened to them, and despite things being documented and them receiving threats, he is still a free man and seemingly living a life without any consequences.
If that doesn't infuriate you on behalf of the victims, then idk what will.
Incredible movie. Loved the initiative taken by those women. And glad that the reporters acted on information.
Sad to think what would have happened (or not happened) if the journalists didn't get involved.
Because apparently the police are callous about women getting threats across the globe.
Goes to show that lack of consequences isn't about lack of evidence. It's just misogyny.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018)
Refreshing plot, little to no boring moments and a fun movie overall.
The plot is a much needed difference from all the romantic movies. First time Bollywood didn't make a comedy+romance movie.
Acting, dialogues and direction was on point. The best part I liked was that the songs in between the movie didn't disrupt the movie, rather they moved the plot forward.
Overall good comedy, good story and a refreshing movie in Bollywood. Exceeded my expectations.
Guest iin London (2017)
Gets worse when you realise it released in 2017.
I actually wished to rate this 0/10. And it's not because of my high expectations from Paresh Rawal based on his other movies.
The movie was cringe-worthy and appalling. Without telling you about the story, here are a few things that actually happened and/or are shown in the movie:
- A song about farts. About 70% of the supposed comedy in the film is on farts. I cannot remember the exact number of times Paresh Rawal farted, followed by everyone stopping and making a face and his wife commenting about his bad stomach.
- The other 30% of the supposed comedy in the film consists of comments on India-Pakistan relationship, Racism, Sexism and misogyny that'll leave you uncomfortable if you care about those issues.
- A scene where the "Chachi Ji" decided to give a proper massage to their neighbor's (Pakistani man+ black wife) kid. She complained about how the kid's skin was dark because the mother didn't clean him properly. Something like "Had she cleaned and massaged him properly, he wouldn't be so dark"
- Casual instances of sexual harassment in workplace ignored by everyone until Chachaji needed to be shown as a hero who cared about women.
- This is subjective, but they had shown so many video clips of 9/11 towards the ending. Trust me when I say this, but the actual footage of planes crashing and people jumping off the building to escape suffocation did not add anything to the plot of the movie. It was a sad, pathetic and shameful way of generating emotions in the audience. I have watched many movies in Hollywood invoke deep feelings while using the 9/11 as a plot but not showing anything other than an audio of the news about the event. It was the last straw for me about this movie. I am ashamed and infuriated that the makers of this movie would stoop so low to generate emotions in the audience. (the movie was still U/A BTW). P.S. I am not against using that as a story, or showing the memorial at the end. But using actual footage from the incident was very, very disrespectful and unnecessary in the movie.
- The blatant "traditionalism" shown was very irritating for me. How the guests imposed all sexist traditions on the guy's girlfriend was just ridiculous. And of course she was okay with it towards the end because that's what women are supposed to do, right?
What's still worse is that even after having not particular standards about comedy, the movie's story-line was haphazard to say the least. Ah, how did I forget about the part where they suspected their guests were terrorists and the producers made a supposed comedy about ISIS killing people? They became suspicious after seeing them talking to a Muslim BTW. Just plain appalling.
To sum it up, even the basic message of the movie was absurd. It basically said that Indians would feel better about leaving their guests in the middle of nowhere rather than confronting them about them overstaying their welcome.
I have lost faith in Bollywood movies after this. I took my Dad (a doctor) along with his friend's family (both doctors) who obviously don't enjoy comedy based on farts. I wouldn't blame my dad for not wanting to watch any movies from now on.
I Origins (2014)
everything after he found Samolina seemed unrealistic and forced
First, when he found her he should've waited for Priya to accompany him for the "test. He shouldn't have taken her to his hotel room like that. Second, they didn't use the elevator while going up but he wanted to use it while coming down? That doesn't make any sense. Also, the test could've done in a much better way. It was flawed in every sense.
The ending seemed inconclusive at best. What was the thing with the guy Ian met in the elevator? What about the lady that did the test on Tobias? Why didn't they find her? She essentially lied to them about a test and they didn't take any action against her.
I enjoyed the movie but the story had a lot of untapped potential.
Elementary: Lesser Evils (2012)
The actor casted as the janitor ruined it for me
I knew he'll be something more than a janitor because he is not just a random actor. He was in suits for a considerably important role. So I knew all along that he has a bigger role to play. and what other role than the murderer. It happens in many TV shows and movies. You can look at an actor and tell that they won't have just a small appearance. They should be careful about it. Most of the time it doesn't spoil anything, but in mystery shows like this they should've thought of it. If you cast any known actor for a very small role, of course it would hint people about the mystery or tell it al together. Otherwise the concept and plot was really good.
