Blake's 7 (1978)
Bring Back Blakes 7
Aven and the the rest of the 7 were cool...almost ridiculously so; I always thought Aven was Blake (surname or something) until I saw the episodes where they referred to Blake as another person and of course the episodes towards the end that actually featured Blake. Why is it that we British are so good at Science Fiction; DR WHO,THE PRISONER (though I only read about this one),HITCH HIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY etc and yet we're...so bad at implementing or rather we cut them off before they can cross the pass. I think it comes down to perhaps the fact that SCI-FI makes people think even our hard drinking, football loving working classes would be stirred into intellectual activity of some kind and that's the last thing we need...I HAVE A SOLUTION! These Brilliant programmes should be made again...but show them late (11pm or midnight) when most people are tired and asleep from a hard evenings drinking. YOu make your money by Selling the shows to the USA, Japan, Europe etc...That way no compromise on intellectual quality and no worries about masses of drones getting uppitty....Everyones Happy.
The Chinese Detective (1981)
BBC Release this on DVD!
The Chinese Detective played by David Yip was a masterful study in understatement. I felt David Yips Performance was Superb even though I kept wanting him to (please forgive the stereotype)do some Kung Fu every time he was up against some villains. He was a real rounded British oriental professional and whats more he was a kick ass cop...The only thing and the reason perhaps that it wasn't renewed was that they (the writer/producer/director etc) didn't give (David Yip) an opportunity to have a harder edge otherwise we could have seen him develop into perhaps a more edgier (Kung Fu kickin'...oh I'm sorry there I go again)...Detective. It would be fantastic if they made a follow up or a sequel to the series (though they wouldn't call it the Chinese Detective perhaps something that hints at the central character being oriental and please make sure he gets to do some friggin Kung Fu or Muay thai or even a bit of Marquis of Queensbury!). In the Meantime release the old series on DVD...what are you waiting for do you know how many people Oriental, Caucasian or Afro Caribbean or otherwise that would wanna watch this seminal show...no obviously you don't...well wake up and make some money from your back catalogue...and please stick David Yip in the follow up or sequel series.
Troy (2004)
SEAN BEAN SHOULD BE IN 'ODDYSEUS' or 'THE ODDYSEY'
This was not as good as I'd hoped it would be; BRad pitt was good, Eric Bana was good, however the stand out performance was that of SEAN BEAN who is well known for his workmanlike performances in films such as RONIN with Deniro and Jean reno and as a Poignantly powerful but confused BOROMIR (one of the most human characters in LOTR (if only for his human failings- the characters that is)). In this his (Sean Beans) Odyseus is a wiley warrior who is (almost) psychoanalytical in his knowledge and understanding; it was a masterful performance. I really would be pleased if some one were to make a movie about Odyseus for somewhere between $20 to $50 million ('cause it wouldn't be fair to rest the weight of $100 million or even $200 million on Seans shoulders) with SEAN as the Star/Lead and to make sure it will be a success make it a rollicking psychological action adventure film. I think it would be cool too to see Sean Bean, patrick Swayze and Michael Keaton in one movie as 3 brothers in some sort of action adventure film. Either way I Know that his performance in Troy was one that I greatly appreciated and identified with.
The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Denzel does it again; Magnificent!
Denzel does it again, it seems that he achieves new levels of subtlety each and every time he works with a really dramatic director; one who has as intense an eye for reality (and the things that shape it) as he has. This Sarcastic witty thriller is perhaps even more powerful than the original, Demme does a very good job crafting the film around Denzel Washington and reflects on reality, the social reality that we and our masters the money men have carved out for humanity in a most interesting way. The fact is that Politics is powered by people with money, I haven't yet seen a poor politician and nor ever will. It's good to be reminded of this...indeed it's something which is essential. I think it's high time that Denzel Washington received another Oscar! his performance was Magnificent!
True Identity (1991)
Lenny was funny!
Lenny Henry who is somewhat under appreciated as an actor was superb in this film he's very funny in 'True Identity' and makes a groundbreaking performance in this in his 'whitesuit'. He makes a fantastic caucasian person looking a little bit like a taller version of Martin Short (comedian/actor). It's unfortunate that this wasn't as big a hit as it should and could have been...It wasn't marketed properly, wasn't on enough Screens etc etc. I 've seen far more mediocre films do far better at the Box Office precisely because the studio put more money into marketing it or opened very wide...and that is a shame. It's business! It would be wise and make great business sense for some studio to do another movie with Lenny Henry as the star; one that mixes comedy with another genre or two eg; Comedy/Action, Comedy/Horror. Comedy/Romance/Action. Comedy/Sci-Fi/Action etc. etc...Lenny Henry is a comedic giant and could make some studio a heck of a lot of money!
Bride & Prejudice (2004)
BRILLIANT!!!
I must admit I had been as skeptical of this film as Don Quixote of giants being windmills(though I do like Bollywood films). I Went to my local (cinema that is), I saw and I was conquered. I think it was greatly to do with the sense of wondrous Joy that Ms Chadha manages to evoke. Something that we here at The Dreamer Pictures had done with my first short film 'The Best Dreamers' sometime ago, perhaps Ms Chadha saw that and was inspired(anyway enough of my humility)...BRIDE AND PREJUDICE IS A HAPPY FILM! forget the hybridisation, forget the fear, forget Bollywood, forget Hollywood; go see it! It is a fun loudly joyous (literally) film, from the opening set piece right through to the end...Purists need not fear I'm already going down to the video shop to grab a video/DVD of pride and prejudice (I'm sure I'll like it; obviously in a different way) Kudos to you Gurinder Chadha also to the cast who were all without exception absolutely Superb! Nitin Ganatra in particular (as Mr Kholi)..was delightful; sort of like a young Woody allen,Peter Sellars...those of you that are waiting for it to come out on DVD, I say to you go and see it where it deserves to be seen, on the big screen. Take your family and friends (a friendly stranger on the bus) any one...I can assure you they'll thank you for it!
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
shoulda been called 'The tragedy of Bill' Spoiler warning
This Comment has an ending spoiler so please do not read it if you have not seen the movie. I have to say that the action (or should I say Gore and Violence in Kill Bill Vol.1) kept my attention through out. no.2 was interesting and I think that's as far as i can go in terms of being glowing or superlative about the film. Still it was more interesting then some of the other stuff around at the moment.
Violence as metaphor, blood as similie and action as activity these are concepts that i'm happy with in a movie as long as there is some sort of decent/story/plot/acting etc to tie them all together. Please beware of reading the next Shoulda been called 'the tragedy...due to ending being spoiled if you haven't seen it yet.
iBrotha (2002)
An admirable first film
An admirable first film; fun, thoughtful and full of little surprises that make the whole experience of watching this little short film an enjoyable one. I look forward to the PC camp picking up the gauntlet thrown down by this Apple champion. I think that the PC versus Apple battle is really one that is advantageous to both parties (or corporates). Technology is what man will make of it; it is either something that will destroy us or ultimately (hopefully) Liberate us and it is in that liberation that we will realise that the search for a viable technology to aid humanity in its growth has been a search for meaning in and of the existence and purpose of humanity itself...
