Yesterday (2019)
Dull, Borning, and Pointless
Yesterday is the kind of movie that thinks it is cleverer than it really is because they take a basic premise and take away anything interesting about it and call it a modern day movie.
The movie was so boring I was itching to look at my watch, the scenes barely connected to anything significant, and there is on character that was there just to be annoying and just wouldn't go away.
Hard Pass on this one
The Counselor (2013)
Boring, Absurd, Pointless, Empty, Souless
The Counselor is a movie that tries too hard to be something that it is not. It tries to be a thought provoking, intense examination of one man's undoing because he choose greed and risk. Instead what we get is a long, drawn out, overcooked cautionary tale of what happens when you join the drug trade.
In the end the dialogue is meaningless, the action preposterous, and the overall "story" becomes a pure waste of time. It is a movie for anyone who needs justification there is no meaning in life.
You will be bored waiting for something to happen only to realize that nothing ever does.
Prometheus (2012)
Like sitting through a boring lecture
Oh Prometheus, a movie that desperately wants to be something it is not. On the surface you are supposed to get the idea that Prometheus is a deep, philosophical analysis of man's search for meaning by discovering his origins. At its core the movie is a mixed bag of philosophy, monster mania and sci-fi mumbo jumbo. It is just all over the map and it doesn't wrap up anything to any satisfying conclusions. Sure, this was the intention of the movie makers, to leave open doors so people could come together and talk about them till the cows come home. If you want to leave the ultimate questions unanswered, fine, but when you bring up some other plot points and then just leave them hanging it pretty much destroys continuity. Don't get me wrong there are people who enjoy this kind of lazy, attention deficit film making. The "look we don't know what happened inside that room (and we don't care)", "the filmmakers didn't hand us the entire story on the silver platter, (since they lacked imagination to make it interesting), isn't that cool?" No, it's not! As you can tell it isn't my thing, some people liked that and for some people Prometheus is a masterpiece and anyone who dares to dislike this movie must not be smart. Read the message board for people like that. In the end, you want to make a movie with a message you have to remember to make it entertaining, which this movie lacked.
The movie was supposed to be a prequel to the "Alien" series, and then the director changed his mind. This kind of indecisiveness shows because there are times you get the idea we are totally connected and then we are getting the idea that it was something completely different. We start going down one corridor and then you realize as we head down another that we are in a totally different movie, not just a different corridor. There is supposed to be a director's cut already that is 2 hours and 27 minutes but what Prometheus needs is less, not more. It needs to cut out the stories that started and then were just forgotten about, it needs to decide if it wants to be a philosophical mumbo jumbo journey or a monster flick. It just needs better direction.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
A Hilarious Movie for All Ages
Madagascar is one of those movies excellent movies that Hollywood can make because it is truly perfect for all ages. The jokes are there, the visual effects are there, and the timing is almost perfect. Everyone is back in fighting form, the lion, the zebra, the giraffe and the hippo. Of course, let's not forget my personal favorite, the Penguins, who were the best part of the previous two and stole this show as well. When I left the theater there was clapping from young and old alike because it was just a fun ride.
I saw this movie in 2D so I can't tell you if the 3D is worth it or not.
Battleship (2012)
Definition of a guilty pleasure
Heaven help me! I liked this movie, now I am going to be one of the few who did. As you can see from the other reviews a lot of people didn't like this movie, so why did I?
1. I came in with low expectations - I was expecting something horrible, boring, long and pointless, but despite myself I liked it, I laughed at the jokes, I connected with the actors (yes, Rihanna too), I was excited by the action and while clichés the plot held my interest
2. The actors did a good job with what they were given - Taylor Kitsch did a good job, Rihanna wasn't that bad, I dare say good, in her role. She was there, she didn't try to chew the scenery, she did her job as an actor/secondary character and it didn't bother me. I give her kudos
3. lost in translation? - you try to make a game into a movie and you want to put parts of them game in it? Not easy, a little cheesy? Of course, but fun? Yes, fun, enjoyable, and in the end it was a part of the story that wasn't as forced as it could have been.
So in conclusion, "Battleship" is a fun, corny, typical summer movie that I like but as you see a lot of people didn't. I think it is a guilty pleasure, something to be enjoyed by the few but annoyed by the rest. In the end I can only suggest this - go in with low expectations, expect a little over the top patriotism like in "Act of Valor" ( but not so heavy), and don't think about it. The movie is not without its flaws or questionable logic, but as it was said so well in another movie - "I suggest you don't think about it and just enjoy the ride"
