3:10 to Yuma (2007)
Stupid, stupid movie
As I watched the stupidities pile up during this stupid fest, I came to regret agreeing to watch it for free!! In no particular order: A Civil War vet who lost a shin/foot is running and jumping like an Olympic athlete; the leader of a very successful gang who is told the sheriff will be back soon, decides to dally with a saloon gal, then stroll down to the saloon to be 'surprised' by lawmen; a man gut shot at close range, has the bullet removed with tin snips, and 10 minutes walks into a saloon to accuse a killer and a few minutes later, is riding into the desert as if nothing happened; the killer is taken on horseback to Yuma with his hands handcuffed IN FRONT of his body so he can use them to throat stab a lawman, attack the gut shot iron man and toss him off a cliff, grab and shoot guns, and cut people with a knife; the killer, never being tied up or restrained in any way, allowing him free reign to kill as many of the posse members as he sees fit; the killer, after a heart to heart with the Civil War Vet decides to shoot and kill his own entire gang (which has been through hell to save him) then ride off on the train so the Vet's kid can get some money (we are aware the killer will be exiting the train around the corner by jumping onto his horse and riding away); as well as the other absurdities listed in other posts about the people of the town all becoming homicidal maniacs, and no member of the good guy posse trying to stop the killing of their members by shooting the bad guy...I could go on. This film has a IMDb rating of over 8??? I suggest the curious watch this film and play a drinking game...perhaps use each ridiculous moment as a signal to chug a brewski. I expect most people would be fairly well plastered at films end.
King Kong (2005)
Film makers show no respect for audience
A superb technical achievement. A complete character flop. The goo goo eyes between Anne and K.K. was embarrassing. She apparently cared not a whit for or about the 17 men that gave their lives trying to rescue her. She was only interested in playing house with the Big Fella, maybe giving him a happy ending. From the moment Anne appears on an NYC street, with the light behind here walking toward the Big Dude, (which a rational woman might consider a stroll toward certain death), I thought the film was lost. I mean, groovies on the ice rink, climbing the Empire State Building, chasing his Kongness, willingness to take a bullet for him, etc. The film makers seemed to be saying "We can show you anything and you idiots will eat it up". I laughed out loud many times during the last 30 minutes of this opus.
What kind of people do the film makers think are out here in the dark, watching their work? Morons? Please, give us come credit for brains. I know these films are aimed a 14 year old boys, but even at 14, I would have howled at this stuff. Because by 14, I had seen the original Kong on TV a dozen times.
This film really affected me, in a negative way. It's very disheartening to see a blockbuster like this, and realize the film makers have no respect to the paying customers...kinda like this movie's Carl Denham.
The Ox-Bow Incident (1942)
A Great Film in Any Genre
One of the best films I have ever seen, and my 2nd favorite Hank Fonda film (12 Angry Men is 1st). The acting is consistently excellent, with Dana Andrews and Anthony Quinn standouts. A 'Western' in time and setting, but a psychological study by any name. A 'grown up' film, probably not appreciated by younger, less sophisticated viewers. I love it. Other posts have mentioned that Fonda does nothing to stop the lynching, but he actually does try. There is a 'scuffel' scene scene where Maj. Tetley says "Stop it". Fonda draws his gun and says, 'No, you stop it..." but Fonda is grabbed by other cowboys before he can draw a bead on the Major. The impression I get is that Hank would have stopped the whole activity by holding his gun on the Major and forcing him to return the victims to town for a trial. A true classic, don't miss it.
Used Cars (1980)
Hilarious Comedy With Some Once-in-a-Lifetime Scenes
You've read the reviews and summations on other posts, but when you watch this gem, be sure to pay close attention to the scene where Rudy and the other 'salesmen' are ready to start selling on the morning after their football break-in commercial. The way Rudy goes from being "Rudy O'hara" to "Rudy Garcia" to "Rudy Washington Carver" is sheer script genius. And when Jeff uses his shotgun to blast away high prices, ending by saying "We blew the s---out of that overpriced m-----F-----just like we blow the s---out of all high prices", if you're not laughing you must be deaf and blind. There are many other great scenes too. I rate this film 9 out of 10 (only because of the slight letdown in the last 20 minutes).
