Traders (2015)
sticks to the brain somehow
from the technical or artistic angle by no mean it is amazing. there's nothing remarkable, no treat for the senses.
however the subject is disturbing making the film interesting enough & leaving an impression on the mind (mine at least).
it's a dive in the world of losers with no hero in it but a wide bunch of losers accepting their condition & running to their death (one way or another).
what is missing beside that psycho-sociological study (through the Vernon character mainly but not only) is a spiritual/philosophical angle to make it truly deep & multi-layered with more subtle character development, better narration & dialogues (i would have liked to see/hear poetry or sarcasm or irony or real funny quotes -they tried but they fail IMO like at the co-worker funeral... something more).
in other words, what is missing is a Stanley Kubrick or a Shane Carruth (re-)writing it & directing it.
conclusion : worth watching but shame it's not the masterpiece it could well have been with more work & perfectionism in the writing & directing.
the generous 7 is because it does leave this lasting impression (unlike 99% of Hollywood productions forgotten 10 minutes after it's over)
Riddick (2013)
cheap & worst
2 for the cgi guys that just did what they were told to do; 0 for the rest.
There is no scenario and not one original idea, the characters are totally shallow with "who care ?" background stories if any.
The bad guy is really bad and stupid, his big friend proves he is even more at the end like he had no time to understand he would not stand a change confronting Riddick. The girl is bad ass and has not much to say or do except maybe showing her big breast, she fall for Riddick although nothing happened in the movie to explain how their relation get built. It just happened.
The actors are seen having a hard time hiding how they could not care less about this job. Face expression, speech, all out of tune... Watching this cheaply thought "thing" the only idea that came to my mind have been : some extremely lazy (or that have lost any sense of creativity or just untalented) people had to pay their taxes.
NB: I enjoyed the first 2 Riddick movies.
The Invasion (2007)
elite brainwashing of the mass
the underlying philosophy of this movie is really shocking : * human are supposed to be slaves of their emotions * war happens because human have emotions * there is no option between the attachment & slavery and the total absence of emotion truth is war happen because the elite are a bunch of psychopath which is not human nature, only the nature of this elite.
truth is that thinking that we are not supposed to master our emotion is equal to leave an open door to being constantly manipulated and to never question our society "because it is human nature to destroy everything beautiful" well that is total BS and thousands of years of recorded worldwide philosophical, spiritual and artistic history demonstrates that the truth is that human nature is about exploring and mastering our own minds and spirits, and contemplating and understanding the universe around us.
But this truth has and is being buried by such kind of entertainment clearly meant to dumb down the masses while convincing them that there is nothing more to this life than consuming and looking down and obeying and accepting whatever we are told to accept.
I should also point out that this heroin giving her heroin (yep those
pills) to her child, is a secondary layer of that propaganda and brainwashing but as much as abject.
(And I thought N Kidman was more than a great actress, a great and intelligent person so i'm pretty disappointed here.)
